John

Evelyn's POV

I was on my way back to work after taking a couple days off my boss recommended. I pulled up to the hospital and parked in the workers part before making my way to the intensive care unit.

"Goodmorning, Evelyn" one of the unit doctors said

I exchanged a greeting and continued walking until I got to my cube where one of the night shift nurses were sleeping. The floor was so quiet, a pin could drop. It was six in the morning so almost all the patients were sleep. That was until I heard soft weeping coming from somewhere. I needed to find out who was crying because it seemed like the nurses were out of it. I walked around quietly as I got closer to the sound, it was coming from John's room.

"Mommy, I miss you..." I heard him say in between sobs.

I walk in to see John crying and talking in his sleep. I close the door quietly behind me and pick him up before sitting down, rocking him like he was a baby. I just rocked him as he went quiet but I still rocked him because that feeling is a horrible feeling. John slowly opened his eyes and looked at me startled.

"You were crying." I say

"I know.." John said quietly

"I know how it feels." I say

"No one knows how I feel." John trails off

"My parents died when I was your age." I say quietly

"But I have a dad, he just doesn't want me." John says

"Well I'm here, any time you need something, I'll be there." Thanks John says smiling

"I'm Evelyn" I say

"I'm John." He says

"Well John, how about later I call up my friend to bring us some pizza." I say

"Really? I haven't had pizza in so long" John says

"John?"

"Yes?" John asks

"What we're you and your mother doing at the park so late?" I ask

"Well we were about to sleep there. It was a warm night and I asked if we could sleep there instead of the old house." John says

"You guys didn't have a home?" I ask

"No.." John says quietly

Just when he said that the door opened and a doctor came in.

"Evelyn." The doctor said

"Yes?"

"May I ask for a favor."

I look at John before setting him down in his bed.

"You need any thing just call my name" I tell -John before walking out with the doctor.

I send John a smile as I gently close the door behind me.

"Yes?" I ask the doctor

"Boss wants you to talk to social workers and the adoption agency to set up adoption for John." The doctor said as he wrote something on his clipboard.

"Why me?" I ask. I really didn't want to do this at all.

"He thought you would be the best one for this." The doctor said before smiling and walking off.

I sighed and walked back to the nurses cube. I sit down and run my hands through my long Brown hair. I pick up my phone and asked Carl if he could bring pepperoni and cheese pizza. He replied quickly yes without even asking why.
I liked Carl, a lot. He seemed to know when to say things or when to do something. The thought of him laughing made me smile. His bright blue eyes that looked electric would twinkle with care and tenderness. His blond hair, kissed by the sun that he frequently ran his fingers through that made him sigh because he messed up his hair but to me it made him look cuter. What was I day dreaming about, I need to work.

I log into the computer and start looking up orphanages. All of them seemed very nice but that's what they want for you to believe, that the children where cared for by "saints of god" or "virgins". In reality, places where horrible behind closed doors. Nuns were the sweetest old ladies you thought they were and the lunishmebts, worse than you thought.

I closed the tab and pulled up a new one ans started looking up social workers until one caught my eye. A serious gaunt looking woman who looked to be in her fifties. Her almost all gray hair pulled into a tight bun. "Helen John". I wrote down her number in the notepad I had and closed the computer. I went to check on John to see him fast asleep with his small arm hanging off the bed. I walked over and pulled him on to the bed and tucked him in good. I turned down the cartoon he was watching and rubbed his hair before kissing his forehead and walking out of his room. I checked my other assigned patients and got them what they needed before returning to my cube.

Henry's POV

"Thankyou for doing this" The dead mother said

"Its whatever." I say

We were watching Evelyn rock the boy and comfort him in his sleep. He was weeping for his mother who was right beside me watching with tears threatening to spill from her eyes. She was a wise woman who had a terrible life and only wanted her son to be more. Evelyn, she seemed tough to everyone but she was sensitive at the heart.

"She grew fond of your son." I say

"Yes, I noticed that the day I met her." She says

I watched as Evelyn just rocked the child while staring off into space. Evelyn was going through troubles again, I believe through the little boy.

"I think he reminds her of herself."
