"I thought this was supposed to be cleaned out?""Who the hell are you?" Clive turned, facing the mystery man. "And why do you care?"
"Because my band is playing here in 20 minutes, we payed 80 bucks for this spot. That stumpy guy said it'd be cleaned out"
"Band?..." Clive trailed off, wrecking his brain to remember what Darryl had told him.
"Yes, band. Murdocs Burning Sensations. Now is it going to be cleaned out or what?"
Clive shrugged "Sure it will be, you just have to help me carry these boxes out."
"Help you? We payed for it to be clean."
"And I'm telling ya it will be, you just gotta help."
There was a small pause as the man sucked his teeth, "Ah alright."
They both picked up a box before Clive lead the way out the back door into the alley.
"So, Murdoc's Burning Sensations huh?" Clive said once they reached the dumpster
"Yup."
"And let me guess, you're Murdoc?"
"Ha, hell no. Im Crunch, the drummer, Murdoc's our bassist and vocalist." Crunchs' tone shifted, it was clear this 'Murdoc' wasn't liked by the man.
"Where's the rest of your band? Surely it's not a one man show tonight."
"I'm sure they're all busy at the bar, can't do a show without a drink."
"What about you? Why aren't you at the bar with them?" Clive questioned
"Someones gotta do the work around here, plus I supply my own" Crunch reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a flask, and took a swig.
"Right on" Clive laughed
Crunch shook his head. "I shouldn't have to be the one doing all this though"
"Whatdya mean by that? Listen if you're upset about the stage and stuff, I don't even work here any-"
Nawww hahaha, I don't really care about having to help you with this. I could use the extra exercise for my biceps. I'm talking about having to be the 'leader' for the band y'know?"
"Sure" Clive lied.
"I didn't even really want to do this band in the first place, but Murdoc was so insistent... always talked about how 'famous' and 'rich' we were gonna be."
Clive was only half way listening at this point, not really caring about this strangers troubles, but still somewhat curious nonetheless.
"Course none of that happened, it's been over a year of these shows, and the rest of us really couldn't care for it anymore. But he's still got his massive ego, and I'm still stuck doing the heavy lifting. All he does is think about this band, while everyone else wants to move on with our lives. He's getting a bit annoying to be honest. But it's whatever, we're planning on cutting him out after tonight anyway."
"Yeah. Sounds like a bother." Clive lied.
With the help of Crunch it only took 15 minutes before the stage was ready to go.
Clive made his way towards the bar while the band began setting up for their show.
He ordered a beer and sat next to Dolly, glancing over her.Now it was only him and her he needed to worry about. Just a few sweet words, and everything would be right on track.
"Sorry I took so long love, had to set some things straight. But now you can order as much as you want."
"You can do whatever you want Clive." She was short in her reply, and had her eyes fixed ahead of her.
"Love-" he took her hand and quickly kissed it. Not breaking eye contact. "Don't be upset, I met with an old friend of mine, he owns the place. He asked me to clean out the stage, so I did. And in return he gave me an open tab." He traced the back of her hand with his thumb "I did it for you honey, honest."
Dolly sighed, her eyes still not meeting his. It was clear Clive's earlier suspicions were correct; she was at the end of her rope.
"HELLO EVERYONE!" an earthy voice boomed,
"You lot are lucky enough to see a performance tonight from the one and only Murdoc's Burning Sensations... brought to you by yours truly~"Clive swung around in his bar stool, beer in hand. So this was the infamous Murdoc. Definitely not what Clive had pictured (if he pictured anything at all). The man was center stage, with tight leather pants and a bass hung at his waist. He had the stage presence, and confidence of a man performing for thousands, but tonight he had an audience of 18.
"Cocky bastard" Clive huffed under his breath while taking a swig of his drink.
