I am trying not to celebrate to much with Nicolas waking up, even though it is so good and brings so many feelings out in me. We still have such a long way to go to get him out of the woods.
"He is awake." I let Jewels know standing at the nurses station. She got me as soon as the call button was pressed just like I had asked.
One of the other nurses claps and smiles, saying how it is always a rewarding feeling when a child is awake and alert even if not her patients.
I stand at the nurses station going over the papers needs to be signed for the chemotherapy. Along with making sure I have everything is right for when I speak with Mr. Winters.
Right now, I want to see how Nicolas keeps improving with the IV medications. It also gives them time together to enjoy before the chemo could make things hard on them again. My only hope is that if he gets this treatment that he won't have many of the awful side effects it could bring.
"Here is the papers you printed, Doctor." Maren places them upside down next to me.
"Thank you." I smile.
"It is nice to see you standing here at the nurse station. Many of the doctors prefer their own offices or the doctors area up the hall."
"I have spent some time in there today while reviewing everything, but it is so stuffy." I laugh some.
She laughs and says she is going to a patients room. Jewels walks back to the station from doing a vital check on Nicolas.
"His vitals are still good. He is awake and talking up a storm, while I got his blood work drawn." She smiles.
"This is all so good. I will see what the lab work comes back as before I go to talk with Mr. Winters."
"It will be back before the end of my shift, so I will hand them to you."
"Are we still on for dinner tonight?" I look up at her from the computer.
"I am for sure. What time does your shift end?" Jewels asks.
"Same as yours, but I will be on call for if something changes with Nicolas over night, being the main one on his case now."
We go back to work and I review the papers over twice. Jewels hands me the lab work results and I go over those, seeing the change with the treatment has done in just five hours.
I grab my clip board and move off the unused blank paper, to place the documents to be signed if Mr. Winters wants to go this course with Nicolas.
With my knuckles slightly knocking on the door, Mr. Winters opens it up and I can see Nicolas on the bed watching television and Tony is still here.
"I have Nicolas's lab results and would like to go over the next steps to take with you when you have a moment." I smile.
Mr. Winters steps outside the door and he closes it back. I walk him over into the next room and close the door, with it being vacant of any patients.
"His blood work has improved tremendously from earlier this morning since the current treatment he is on. I am confident that he is stable enough to move onto chemotherapy starting tomorrow mid-morning, if you agree to it."
"Is there anything else we can do?" Mr. Winters sighs.
"There is the option of a stem transplant with the cancer Nicolas has. The only thing is if we were to go that option first, it may not get everything. By starting chemo and running tests periodically we can see his levels of the cancer cells come down and then we could do the transplant for a higher success rate."
Mr. Winters rubs his face some and we go over the all the side effects and benefits this option can bring. I like how thorough he is in making sure it is the best for his son.
We walk back to the room and Mr. Winters talks with Nicolas and I help to answer things the best way he may understand. Nicolas seems nervous but a brave little guy and Mr. Winters signs the papers once he tells Nicolas is it going to be the best thing to do for him.
I stick around for a bit longer talking with Nicolas and checked over him again, before leaving the room. I get everything typed into his chart before clocking out for the day.
Jewels waits for me outside the hospital doors. In our scrubs we set out to find something for dinner together.
"He signed the papers to start the treatment tomorrow." I finally sigh out in my car to Jewels.
"I hope he will be one of the children that doesn't get many of the side effects and bounces back from it quickly." Jewels frowns.
"So do I."
We settle on a chicken salad from the deli market before going back to my place. I unlock the door for us to get in and we sit on the couch. At the same time we let out a small content sigh, making us both laugh.
"Nothing like just getting home and sitting on something comfortable." I laugh.
"That is the truth. Even when we get time to sit during work the chairs are hard and most of the time you are lucky to get five minutes on the rear." Jewels laughs.
We turn on the television and Jewels goes for a romance movie.
"We got to find someone." Jewels sighs.
"They say love finds you unexpectantly." I chide.
"Yeah, it would probably help if I got out and about. So, I can't fuss if I am not just going out there to meet anyone."
"Same here. I still have boards to go through and now no matter what I have a patient case that needs my sole attention."
"Holly, I really think peds is where you belong too." Jewels smiles at me.
My mind reels over it all, but this case and seeing the way it has been really has me pulling to peds. I know there may be some hard times, but that is sadly in any field of medicine.
