chapter twenty-one,
❝the golden boy and his dolphin crew!
R O M E O

━━━Romeo had hoped the ancient lands wouldn't be as bad as they'd been told. Of course, he's wrong. Several times an hour, something attacks the ship. A flock of flesh-eating Stymphalian birds swoops out of the night sky, and Festus torches them. Storm spirits swirl around the mast, and Jason blasts them with lightning. While Coach Hedge had been having dinner, a wild pegasus appears from nowhere, stomps all over the satyr's enchiladas, and flies away again, leaving the deck with cheesy footprints.

He tosses and turns in his bed all night. Eventually, he gets up and paces around his room. He turns on a little nightlight and stares at the symbols for what feels to be hours. He runs his hand through his hair a million times in thought. He even slips out of his room and takes a cold shower at about two in the morning, hoping to clear his thoughts. He goes back to his room, his hair still a little damp, still thinking about the marks on his wrist.

They seem to haunt him, taunt him, mess with him.

Hercules's words still ring in his mind.

The greatest of the Romans shall die.

Romeo almost wakes Jason or Valentina up, wanting to talk to someone, but he doesn't want to worry them. He almost goes to talk to Regina, ask her what the symbols mean, but she already has so much on her mind. The closer they get to Rome, the more the Mark of Athena is beginning to haunt her, and she's only one kid━she doesn't need any more burdens thrust upon her.

Romeo Maximus will not be a burden to his family.

That leaves one last person, who Romeo is sure of, that knows what these symbols mean.

     Annabeth Chase

He doesn't want to bother her, but he can't sleep. He can't think of anything else. He needs some sort of closure━good or bad.

So, Romeo pulls on some sweatpants and a T-shirt and creeps out of his cabin again. Down the hall, he can hear the satyr Coach Hedge snoring. Unfortunately for Romeo, he has to creep past everyone else's doors━he is the last cabin on the boys' side, across from Valentina's, and Annabeth's is the first one on the other side of the hall━next to Coach Hedge's.

He tiptoes down the hall. It's about four in the morning. Romeo sees Annabeth's door is slightly open. He goes to knock, but he knows the noise would wake Coach Hedge. Instead, he ever so slowly pushes the door open. He doesn't make an effort to go inside, but instead looks around the room.
