chapter thirty,
❝a story to be continued!

━━━Ajax Luz wakes on the deck of a ship, staring at the starry sky fading into hues of gold from the rising sun. A purple cloak is wrapped around him like a blanket, and he recognizes it as Reyna's. He goes to sit up, but someone takes his shirt and keeps him down.

"Rest," says a voice. Reyna appears beside him, her skin kissed by the light. "You had quite the fall."

"Nothing I can't handle," says Ajax. Then, as he begins to see her face more, he notices how her eyes look red and her cheeks puffy, as though she has been crying. He can sense her sadness and despair. "What's the matter?"

Reyna shakes her head, her head dipping so he can't see it, but Ajax lifts it up so she looks at him again. If it had been anyone else, she might have taken her blade and run them through, but she doesn't seem to mind Ajax's touch, despite their fight. She looks at him with tears in her eyes.

"Reyna," Ajax says firmly, "what happened?"

"We━we were attacked, remember?" When he nods, she continues, "You fell. I went after you immediately. I was attacked by so many monsters... I don't know where they all came from. Eventually, I found you. You were unconscious. I tried to wake you, but venti started to surround me with... with even more monsters ━ more than I could handle. And Skippy was hurt badly. He... he collapsed." She pauses and forces back a sob.

"I━I don't know what happened. All I knew was that I had to protect you."

Ajax nods. "That's right. I remember. I summoned light to blast the monsters away."

Reyna looks at him, frowning. "No," she says. "You were unconscious. You weren't moving. You didn't summon any light."

"Yes." Ajax nods his head again, certain that he did. "Yeah, I did, Reyna. I remember."

"Ajax," says Reyna, "you were unconscious the entire time. I... I summoned it."

Ajax stares at her. His eyebrows crease together, mouth agape slightly. He tries to wrap his head around that idea... no, it doesn't make any sense. She's a daughter of Bellona, not Apollo. "No, you couldn't have," he says.

"It was me," Reyna says. "The light was white, not your golden."

     "But..."
