I couldn't sleep, I couldn't eat, I couldn't do anything. I was worried about Emily, she isn't dead but she has the fever, but that's not what I was only worried about. That was my sleep schedule and it was completely destroyed at this point. Mother didn't seem to have a problem with it. To her me sleeping sickness was going away, a miracle had shined upon me.
Mother had become more dramatic than usual. Ever since she came from Emily's house she had been taking four baths a day, making us follow her steps. She was going mad about the fever saying, "this might be the end for is all" every time.
Every time a costumer came she would make Mary check if they were sick, putting on gloves that reached her elbows.
Maybe this was the end of us all. Mother's screaming and ranting was was going to be the end of me for sure not the fever.

__________The hallow instrument faint sound traveled through the city indicating another death.
The roads where as dead as the rat threw out last week or the died bodies covered in dirt 6 foot under. You could not hear the children cries or the seller's voices, only my moms voice could be heard down stairs yelling at my sister.
Cries of mother's could be heard sometimes, hoping not to lose their children to the fever.
The bug that buzzed around my room could not be heard anymore.
This was my home, Philadelphia, the gost city.

August 26, 1973Emily and I have been sending letters to each other, some happy while some not so happy.
Today I had just received a letter from her, and it made my heart drop. They where running out of food, and she was asking if it was possible to for me to help.
(The letter)
_______________________________________________Dear, Layla
My days are growing shorter by days, that what mama says, but we must have hope in God everything happens for a reason. My days are filled with papa and mama crying every night, taking medicine from a man in strange attire my parents hired to take care of me. This is worst than doing my chores.
But that's not the only problem, food is running out, my family struggles to get food, while there are no stalls in the streets to sell food. I don't know what's going to happen to us, but if it's possible can your family spear us some food. This would help us big time.
And you won't believe what happened, Sam came to my house to see how I was doing. It makes my heart skip a beat. You think I have a chance with him if I survive the fever?
Tell me what you think, ok?From, your only friend I must say
To, Layla
_______________________________________________Emily had had the biggest crush on Sam, every one knew so did Sam. Hearing Sam went to see Emily made me giggle like a mad lady, but that wasn't what I was worried about. This might just be the last chance I have to see Emily, if I showed mother the letter it might work like magic.
I put on my socks. Right after putting them on I see Charlie my sisters cat. I didn't know why she looked so sad or maybe It was that there where no more rats to chase anymore, but too me it was as win win.
I run down stairs, unknowing what waited for the future for me and Emily.
