Convincing mother was like Convincing a donkey, she was too stubborn.
"You want us to die or something, it's to dangerous, just in the streets is a walking death trap and you want to go to someone who has the fever unbelievable."
"But she'll die if we don't do something" I say tears are starting to flow down my cheek."The girl is already dead, she has the Fever she can't escape the death that's waiting for her already, you can't do anything, we can't do anything."
"And besides she doing them a favor if she dies. They'll have enough food if she dies, so give it a rest."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing, now I wished that I had stopped cleaning the wax out after my ear in spring instead of the start of summer. My mother, Ms. Mae was saying the worst things that I have ever heard from her mouth.
"Don't s-say things to h-her like t-that she my b-best f-friend " tears were falling down my cheeks like a heavy rain fall. "Don't wish her death, even I wouldn't do that to you if you were to have the fever."
"Layla listen, I am not wishing her death and God for bead form me to get the fever. The girl is sick" she says.
I run up stairs " if it's anyone that's sick it's you."
I could see the shock look on my sisters face, this was the most drama she had since the fever started.
"Layla come down here this instant, you are not allowed too talk to me like that."
I just want everything to end, I will do what ever it takes even if I get the feve--.
My thoughts were cut short by Mary."Hey, let's talk." "I know this is hard for you but you have to realize that any one can get the fever. We cannot afford to take a risk, and---" she was cut short by moms shouting. She was looking for her. Mary gave my a weak smile.
She was gone.
I put my ear against the door. " maybe it's not the Yellow fever, it could be anything." Mary says "oh no, it's the fever I saw it with my own eyes." "If she was to die from the fever there will be no struggle at least." Mother said. "But this unbelievable she was a healthy girl, not once did I see he her sneeze." Mother continued "That's the truth, the fever doesn't care who you are it just doesn't." Mary says. "The girl is just a servant, her death wouldn't have that damage on us." Mother says.
Her death.
She's just a servant.
Her death wouldn't hurt us.
I remove my ear form the door before I could hear anything would hurt my heart anymore.
I lie down on my bed. I see her pale skin, she's wearing the same sky blue dress that match her eyes. Her black straight hair that was some what messed up.
I imagined her telling one of her cheesy jokes.
I imagined her panicking about be late for work.
I imagined her gossiping about her crush.
I miss those days.
She was the girl I used to play dolls with , played in the garden with, we sang songs together as we walked through the streets without a care in the world. I missed all of that.
I cried myself to sleep.
__________________________
I wake up around 12 in the midnight. Every body was sleeping, this was perfect. I put on a dress and gloves that Mary was wearing the other day.
I have never disobeyed mother before.
I tiptoe downstairs to be stopped by a female shadow.
"Oh my god you scared me" I whisper shout to my sister.
"Your lucky it was me and not Mary or mom you walked upon to."She said "I am not a block head like mom you know It was every obvious that you would sneak out at night." "And don't worry I won't tell mom only if you take me" she finished.
Oh God why did she have to be awake. "No you are not." I tell her putting on my boots. "Then I'll scream" she says. "And then you will wake up the neighbors" I say back.
"You can't wake up a dead people up" she says as she smirks at me.
Oh my, the neighbors were dead. Well it's not like I care that's not what I was down here for.
"Fine you can come" I say "but not a word to mother." I say.
------
I hold my sisters hand as we walked through the empty streets of Philadelphia.
I didn't care what was coming my way, all I knew was I was going to see Emily maybe for the last time in my life.
