Alaric

I walked inside the café, following my fiancé and the waitress greeted her as if she was a really good friend of hers.

"Good morning Eveline. Want to try something new again?" The waitress came to us as soon as we settled at a table.

My eyes on Eveline, I watched her smile brightly at the girl and replied,
"No, I liked the waffles of last time so I will take it again. And you, Alaric?"

My eyes widened, knowing she caught me looking at her the whole time and my only immediate response was to clear my throat first.

"I will go with a black coffee thank you."

"Oh before I forget, Natasha, this is my fiancé, Alaric. Alaric, this is my friend, Natasha."

"Oh goodness. Glad to meet you, Sir. And congratulations to both of you."

The embarassed look the girl gave both of us made me doubt even more why Eveline introduced me as her husband-to-be so eagerly. But I loved it.

Eveline talked to her casually and I tried my best to ignore them. It was crazy that even though she was a dangerous man's daughter, she was the sweetest and most adorable woman I've met yet the one with the saddest eyes I've ever seen.

The girl left and soon Eveline's attention was back on me.

"I'm glad you introduced us as an engaged couple."

"She was checking you up. It would look bad if my soon-to-be husband was being checked up by a waitress in front of me."

I let out a low chuckle. Have I ever mentioned how smart and sarcastic she was? And I was absolutely loving this side of hers.

"Hey, don't be too proud of yourself Mr Alaric. We're not really a couple, are we?"

There it was, the question I've been asking myself since last night. After the marriage, I could try to be her friend and pretend to be a happily married couple in public but would we ever be a real couple?

"You tell me what we are, Eveline."

Before she could reply, the waitress came back, and served us but Eveline didn't hold any conversation with her unlike what she apparently expected. She walked away, leaving both of us alone.

Eveline's eyes on her waffles, it seemed as if she was trying to avoid my gaze and I was experienced enough in understanding people's body languages to know something was bothering her. But whatever it was, I wanted her to feel comfortable enough with me to tell me about it.

"I'm glad you're asking me about us yourself but I will let you decide when I tell you about me."

I gave her a confused look and replied,
"What are you talking about, Eveline?"

This time she finally looked at me but not like how I wanted her to. Her beautiful brown eyes now red with unshed tears, I didn't want to be a dangerous man of power at this moment. Instead, I wanted to bring her peace and comfort, something I've never felt myself before.

Her hands shaking as she wiped away her tears, she tore her gaze away from me and focused on the people strolling peacefully outside.

"This marriage between us is supposed to make our families stronger in power. Our bond and union is expected to be pure, following all the traditions of the Five Points. And I know as Underboss how much it matters for you to marry a-"

Her words halted halfway as she sobbed, still avoiding my gaze and somehow, I already knew what she was trying to say.

"I... I can't begin our relationship with a lie. Before you, there was Neill and I know that you already know how much I loved him, Alaric. I may not be... a virgin like how the traditions expect me to be but what I can promise you is that if you still want to go on with the marriage, I will be the wife you deserve. Just don't expect much from me behind closed doors."
