Thunder clapped, lighting the sky a bright red, as bright as the blood dripping down my sides. The bats were endlessly feeding off both Steve and I, gnawing at our bodies like we were dead pieces of meat. The blood curdling screams escaping our mouths were enough to make anyone cry in fear, let alone the exposed flesh and blood. My body shook and jerked around, hoping to fight off the bats as I searched through their minds. Looking to induce sleep over the group of bats, I focused all my strength to my powers, trying my hardest to inspect their brains through the indescribable pain. About a pound of fat chewed off my body exposed the inside of my body to the bacteria all around me. As hard as I tried, blood was now pouring out of my nose, the pain was too hard to work through and I faded off to the sounds of Steve's screaming.
A bang woke me up as I turned over to Steve, Nancy over him with an oar in her hand. Eddie had grabbed one too and raced over to help me. "Jesus Christ!" He screamed, hitting the bats off me, watching as the blood spread on the floor. Both Robin and Eddie had come over to help me, stepping on the bats around my body and hitting them away like baseballs. Nancy stood on the bat choking Steve, hitting it away from him as I started to collect myself, a bat still clung onto my arm. I screamed as I ripped it off me, its teeth gripped to my flesh and Eddie starred in fear as my blood splashed onto his face. He looked back towards a loud sound in the distance, "Shit!" He said, watching as a flock of bats flew towards us.
I got up to my feet, my hands shook as I grabbed my bitten leg, limping towards Steve. I stopped as a bat flew closer to Eddie, watching as he struggled to fling it away, however, he managed. "Watch out!" He screamed to Nancy as a bat grasped the back of her shirt, I picked up the small machete I had dropped beside me, slicing the bat off of her. Another bat approached Eddie, then another, but I was pulled in both his and Steve's direction. I watched as the one bat continued to choke Steve, but also as another had started gnawing as Eddie's fists. Eddie managed to pin one to the floor, killing it. I couldn't make up my mind, pulling myself together again and, once more, focusing on my powers. I held out my arms, one in Eddie's direction and the other in Steve's, closing my eyes as I started breathing more evenly. It was difficult for me to focus on two minds at once, screaming as I dug deeper into the bats' brains. They splat onto the floor, letting go of Steve's neck and Eddie's jacket. I had successfully put two bats to sleep! Steve gasped for air and Eddie looked back, confused. I saw his face as he looked at me, almost scared, looking back at the bat on the floor. But as more came along, we restarted our fight against these creatures. "Go to hell!" Nancy screamed, stabbing a bat with an oar. I sliced my way through more of the flock, Robin behind me, grabbing at one's tail. "Son of a bitch!" Eddie screamed, breaking his oar on a bat's head. Steve grabbed another mid-flight, biting its head off and spitting out the blood, ripping it in half.
Although we had defeated the first wave of monsters, a bigger group was approaching farther away. I spun the machete in my hand and turned to the rest of the group, watching their expressions turn into ones of fear. "Steve..." Nancy and I both said as Eddie was screaming Jesus' name. "Oh my god, Steve...Lori! Are you two okay?" Nancy continued running to Steve. I stared in the distance, at the flock heading towards us, I was afraid and my heart dropped into my stomach. "Took about a pound of flesh," Steve said, looking down at his stomach, "But other than that, yeah, never better." Robin walked up to me, examining my body the same way Nancy was doing to Steve. "Uh, do you guys think these bats have, like, rabies or something?" Robin said, looking down at my leg and then down at a dead bat on the floor. "What?" I said watching her. She kneeled down to poke at the bat with a stick, "It's just that rabies are, like, my number one greatest fear. And I think we should probably get you two to a doctor, like, really soon because once the symptoms set it, it's too late. You're already, like, dead!" We looked at her for a moment, I thought about what would happen to Steve and I. Before I could speak, however, my big fear had caught up with us, chittering as they closed in on our group. They all gasped and I held up my weapon as the rest of them grouped up behind me. The bats landed in front of us, the red lightening brightening up their disgusting slimy bodies. "All right," Steve said behind me, "There's not that many. We can take 'em, right?" I looked back at him pointing up ahead as more came flying in, "Not that many, huh?" I watched as a huge swarm of bats came flying in, then I darted my head towards the woods. I had always used the woods as a hiding place over the years, perhaps it would be of use right now. "The woods!" I said, pulling at Steve's arm and pointing it out to the group, "Go!" They started running, but I stayed behind, holding my place with the weapon in my hand. "I can fight them off, just go! Please!" I shook my hands as if I were shooing them away and, seeing them start running, I turned away.
The creatures flew closer to me, a swarm of about 40 bats. My heart raced as I saw them closing in on me, the gashes in me throbbed in pain. I thought back to how my parents taught me to handle my powers. Their comforting words and ways of getting me to understand myself. I used their methods, focusing all my strength to the power I felt inside me. I evened my breathing, planted ground, and held up my hands towards the bats. I focused on their minds as a whole, instead of individually, grouping them together. I searched through their minds, finding a part that I could put to sleep and raised my arms, shaking as I attempted to make the group fall. I screamed as my attempts weakened and I felt myself slipping away, falling down to my scratched knees, my leg in so much pain. I felt my right arm giving out as the cut worsened, but kept going, thinking of how much my friends needed me. I thought of how much my parents needed me too, but how I wasn't able to save them, I couldn't let more people that I loved die. I got up, screaming, more motivated than ever. Tears streamed down my face as I felt the bats' minds fall into their coma. And when I had felt their minds shut off, I let go, hearing their bodies hit the floor and fell to the floor myself. Before I could fall straight onto my face, an arm caught me, holding me. "Hey! Williams, you alright?"A familiar voice said to me, wiping the blood off of my face. It was Eddie, I looked up at him with a weak smile which quickly faded. I stood, using the last of my strength to energize my worried body, watching as Nancy, Robin, Steve and Eddie looked at me. "You guys didn't go! I told you to run!" I looked at them, confused, mad even, "You all could have died!" I screamed at them, gasping for air in my tired lungs. "We couldn't just leave you here, Lori," Robin said, speaking for the group. "Yeah...I mean you were...badass though," Eddie said, grabbing my shoulder and smiling. I melted under his touch, smiling too, "Badass, huh?" I chuckled, coughing as I grabbed onto my stomach. "Shit! We need to help you, Lori. Come on," Steve said, rolling his eyes at us. I wobbled as I started walking, using Eddie to help stand me up, "Just give me a minute alright?" I said, grabbing my head. My eyesight darkened, the sounds around me were muffled and I felt lightheaded. "Williams!" Eddie shouted, "Lori!" I fainted, falling onto the floor, Eddie had caught me. He held me close to him, checking for a heartbeat and finding one, "Thank God! I mean it...It's faint, but...but she's alive."
