When I get back home, everyone's already having dinner and my plate is on the table with a paper towel over it.

"Your food is probably cold now," says my dad before he takes a bite out of his mashed potatoes. He still has on his work clothes.

I take off my shoes by the door.

"It's fine, I'll just warm it up."

I glance at Owen for a second, look away, and then back at him again. His shoulders are drooped, and he's resting his hand on the side of his face.

"What's wrong with you," I ask him. He sighs.

"Melinda's moving."

"Moving? You told me she broke up with you," says my mom.

"Yeah. That too," Owen says as he's playing with his food.

"She says that It'll be best for us to be friends which I think is pretty fucked up because she doesn't even want to try long distance." He starts to raise his voice. "And If you really love someone, you'd want to work things out but noooo, she just wants to quit."

My mom raises her eyebrows. "Language."

After I warm up my food again and sit at the dinner table, my dad clears his throat. "Owen, things won't work out the way you want it to and sometimes you just have to let things be."

Owen runs his fingers through his hair and my mom nods in agreement.

"Life will go on and you'll soon move on and find someone else. I know you're angry, but time will heal," says my dad as he takes his last bite and walks to the sink to rinse off his plate.

Owen looks up at me and I give him a reassuring smile. He smiles back and says, "At least you and your girlfriend are doing well."

The next morning I woke up to the smell of coffee and a text from Imani. I rub my eyes, sit up, and open my phone.

Imani: I can't come to school for now, and my doctor says it's best if I stay in the hospital.

Me: So you're leaving early?

Imani: Yeah, I'm sorry but my mom thinks it's getting worse.

Me: No, it's fine. I'm just super worried about you. Can we visit you this afternoon?

Imani: Of course.

Imani: I have to go pack now. See you later?

Me: Yes. I love you so much.

Imani: I love you too.

I throw my phone across the bed and get ready for school. By the time I'm downstairs, my dad is drinking his coffee and eating toast, reading the newspaper.

"Where's mom?"

"She has a meeting this morning," he says as he sits his mug down and folds the paper."I have to start getting ready for work. Can you ride with your brother and his friend?"

I grab a banana and start peeling it. "Yeah, I guess."

My dad start's to stand. "Great. He'll be down in a minute."

Once we got to school, Owen says bye to me and starts walking with his friend in the other direction to the field house. I don't know where else to go since I'm so used to being around Imani all the time, so I just start heading towards the library when Charlie walks up from behind me.

"Hey."

"Hey," I say in a low tone.

"Where's Imani?"
