CHAPTER SEVEN

"AMAKA"

I say as soon as I answer the call. I see as everyone's face changes and they all focus on me.
"I know, I should have called" she says and I don't even wait for her to finish, we've all been worried.
"What's taking you guys so long?" I ask and Tobi nods his head like he's approving my question.
"It's a long story my baby. A lot has happened, I didn't even have my phone with me" she sounds serious. Amaka doesn't sound serious unless it is serious.
"Tell me" I say and wait for her to explain why they haven't gotten back since so long.
"When I got to Chika's place, that Anita girl was there already and they were arguing. I won't even call it arguing, she was just shouting and dragging Chika's shirt, you know how she can be now. Till now I don't even understand what happened o. Me I felt it's just normal couple fight so I didn't interrupt, until some policemen came and arrested Chika" she stops for a while, probably to give me time to at least process what she's being saying.

Anita and Chika had a fight. They arrested Chika. I am completely lost, I don't understand any of it.

"We're at the station now and they're saying they're keeping him here for assault. They wouldn't even take bail" she continues

I still haven't said anything, what am I even supposed to say? Chika is not a criminal. Assault? It's definitely a mistake, or a birthday prank

"Are you serious?" I ask. It's definitely a prank.
"Would I joke with something like this? I don't know what to do again, we've been here for hours now and I've been trying all I can, that's why I couldn't call any of you" she explains
"Oh.my.God! Do you think Anita did this? Maybe because of their argument" I say.

It's possible, Anita is a crazy person and I won't be surprised if she was the one who set him up only because of a misunderstanding.
The first time I met her, she slapped Chika just because she thought I was his other woman. At the time I and Chika weren't even friends, he was helping me with some plumbing work and she walked in and started shouting "So this is her" before I even knew what was happening she had slapped Chika. I really don't get why he's with someone so dramatic and insecure.

"I don't think so o. Because she's here with me too. We're both trying to get him out" Amaka answers.
"Okay. I'm coming there now, text me the address"
"If you can contact any of your lawyer friends, it would really help o" she says before I hang up and meet the questioning eyes of all the other people in the room.
"Chika was arrested" I say and immediately I start searching my contacts for any connection I can get with the police or a 'lawyer friend'.

Dating Moses came with a lot of benefits.

"Eh!"
"What happened?"
"Ah"
I can't even place who is saying what, I'm focusing on trying to get help.

I try calling a Mr Ahmed that I know in one of the top positions in the police but he doesn't answer the call. I don't blame him, it's a Friday evening and he's probably not taking work calls right now.
I don't have many lawyer friends but Kingsley's a Judge, he should be able to help. I'm not even sure what I'm asking help for. I don't even know what's happening. I should get to the police station first, maybe even negotiate with them nothing a few thousands won't do.

"What's happening?" Tobi asks
"What do you mean Chika was arrested?" his wife follows
"Tell us what happened!" Jennifer says a little too loud and I snap.

I'm under a lot of stress as it is and it's a little too much that they've been asking me questions upon questions since the call with Amaka. I've not exactly had a smooth day and I don't exactly like her, she doesn't have any right to even be talking to me, talk less of shouting.

"Abeg abeg abeg abeggg. Mind your tone with me" I try to control myself and stop there. I don't try hard enough. "Infact, get out of my house" I add in the most decent way I can.

Everybody is looking at me like they didn't just hear me. Jennifer still hasn't left.
Maybe I'm just taking out all the things that happened today on her or maybe she really should just mind what she says with me especially at a time like this.

"You're still here?" I ask. Am I mistaking or is that a smile on her face? Does she think I'm joking?
'Not me, not today' I keep repeating in my head trying to be composed. Why is everyone ignoring me?

I walk to where she is, forcefully make her stand and I begin to drag her out of my house ignoring Tobi, his wife and George just like they had ignored me.
"I don't even like you" I say
"You're crazy!" She shouts at the exact time I close the door right in her face.
"You overreacted" George says when I sit.

Of course I overreacted, I just needed an excuse to get her out of my air.

"I don't like people shouting at me. Especially not her, who the hell is she?" I try to calm down thinking of Chika; he's in prison right now and I have to find a way to help, I should focus on that. Amaka had already texted the police station.
"What did Amaka say?" George asks like a normal person.
"A story about Anita fighting with Chika then the police just came and arrested him. She also doesn't really get what happened" I say checking Amaka's text "She just sent the station they're at, I'm going there" I stand up and everybody stands up too.
"You're crazy if you think we'll let you go alone" Tobi says
"No, no, you have your pharmacy stuff tommorow and it's late already" I say. I really don't want them to worry, I can sort this out on my own.
"She's right" George grabs his phone "I'll go with her, don't worry" he adds and Tobi surprisingly let's it go.
"Update us, okay?" Tobi's wife says as I and George head to the station
