That evening dad landed In our home In Lagos state by 10:15pm.
“Lagos traffic” he said
I was sleeping on mom’s laps when the door bell rang; mom gently put my head on the sofa and went to attend to the door.
The noise on the door got me to open my eyes; I danced and jumped in joy at the sight of Dad whom I last saw 2 years ago.
Yes I said dad promised to come back after a year, but he didn’t; today made it two years since he left.
According to him a disease broke out in the country and the Authorities shut down airports, sea deports, bus terminals and train stations to prevent people from leaving the country.
Doctors and scientists were sent on an assignment to find the cure to the virus (EVITA). My dad looked so lean when he came back and hungry too.
It was as if he didn’t get enough to eat; what excited me the most were the stories that he told us. These were stories of his struggles, people he met and the award he won.
He also told is how him and his scientists, microbiologists, medical doctors and biochemist friends had to stay woke for days and nights just to find antidotes for the virus and to save the infected.
It was amusing and the fun part is the fact that dad came back to us alive and without a broken limb. We believed that the happiness we longed for has finally come knocking on our door.
What we never knew was that our happiness was being timed, or should I say, limited.
6 months later, at exactly 5:30am, the living room door bell rang; my parents were still on the bed while I was in the living room watching
“Dooley and pals”.
I tried calling out to my parents to inform them of the noise on the door but they won’t come out, so I stood up and went to the door. When I was about opening the door , dad came out adjusting his robe.
With his glasses on one hand, he used his other hand and wiped his eyes; then he wore back his glasses.
Standing by the door post was a very tall and beautiful woman; I was sure that I had seen her somewhere before, but just couldn’t place from where and when.
“Who is that” mom asked from behind.
I looked at her, and back at my dad who was starring at the lady; I also looked at the lady and back at dad.
“Hello shola” dad greeted the young lady.
From his facial expression one can tell that he was shocked to see Shola.
Mom walked closer to dad, she put her hand on his shoulder , then his waist .Aunty shola was in her early 30s but she looked 18, with figure 8 and a beautiful natural red lips. Her presence annoyed Mom, but then she said nothing.
“Shola, my wife; honey, Shola” dad introduced the two women to one another.
“Wo is she, dad” I asked after minutes if no detailed explanation.
“ooh sorry dear, shola is my colleague at work; he was visiting her family here I Lagos, so we decided to come back together” dad explained.
“Ooh pardon my manners; come in” mom said and welcomed her in.
Aunty Shola came to send an update to Dad; the NGO company that dad currently works for sent her to check up on him concerning their discussions months ago.
They have been trying to reach him on phone and his line hasn’t been going through, and he also hasn’t checked his emails.
The organization wants him to travel to Pakistan and become the official doctor of Pakistani armies who were sent off to war against India.
