↳ ♡₊˚. What is a Creepypasta?Creepypastas are horror-themed legends that have spread across the Internet. Creepypasta has since become a term for any horror content that has been posted on the Internet. These Internet entries are frequently brief, user-generated paranormal stories meant to frighten readers. They contain graphic accounts of murder, suicide, and otherworldly occurrences. Creepypasta covers a wide range of topics, including ghosts, murder, zombies, and haunted television shows and video games. Creepypastas can be as short as a single paragraph or as long as a multi-part series spanning multiple media types.
After the 2014 "Slender Man stabbing," in which a 12-year-old girl was stabbed by two of her friends, creepypastas relating to the Slender Man character gained public attention. The perpetrators claimed they "wanted to prove the Slender Man skeptics wrong." Following the murder attempt, the administrators of some creepypasta websites issued statements reminding readers of the "line between fiction and reality."
Creepypasta is a combination of the words creepy and copypasta; the term was introduced around 2007 on the imageboard 4chan. Copypasta refers to viral, copied, and pasted text; the term was created around 2006 on 4chan.
↳ ♡₊˚. History:
It is unknown where creepypasta originated. Early creepypastas were typically written anonymously and routinely re-posted, making the genre's history difficult to trace. According to Jessica Roy, writing for Time, creepypastas first appeared in the 1990s when the text of chain emails was reposted on Internet forums and Usenet groups. According to Aja Romano of the Daily Dot, Ted the Caver was arguably the first example of creepypasta. The story, which was published on Angelfire in 2001, was written in the first person from Ted's point of view as he and several friends explored an increasingly terrifying cave system.
Many of the first creepypastas were made up of rituals, personal anecdotes, and urban legends like Polybius and Bunny Man. Darcie Nadel, writing for TurboNews, argued that for these early creepypastas to be re-posted, they had to be somewhat believable and realistic. Many of the first creepypastas were created on 4chan's /x/ board, which specialized in the paranormal.
Creepypasta.com debuted in 2008, followed by the Creepypasta Wiki and r/NoSleep (a Reddit forum, or subreddit) in 2010. The websites established a permanent archive of creepypasta, which had a significant impact on the genre. Many authors began using creepypasta characters in their own stories, resulting in the formation of continuities spanning multiple works.
According to Time magazine, the genre reached its peak audience in 2010 when The New York Times covered it.
Creepypasta has evolved to include the majority of horror stories written on the Internet. Authorship has become increasingly important over time, with many creepypastas written by named authors rather than anonymous individuals. Many of these authors try to gain attention through their creepypasta. Copying and pasting creepypastas has become less common over time; many members of the creepypasta community regard it as intellectual theft.
