Steve. I needed to talk to Steve if I could get away from my parents for even just a moment. Steve bringing the pizza had sealed the deal, he was going to be here as long as he wanted. Hell my parents would probably give him my room if he so much as asked. He'd always been their favorite kid, while he wasn't theirs. Granted, he deserved it. With how his parents were, he deserved a home where he felt welcomed.
"Well Mrs Walsh as much as I have missed you, I came to talk to Lucy about something. Is it alright if we go outside?" My mother's face lit up like a goddamn Christmas Tree, that old hope suddenly a blazing flame once again.
"Of course sweetie, you know your way around the house." That was when Steve shot me a look before nodding towards the back door. I led the way out, smiling at my parents as we went by, my Father giving me a thumbs up.
"Glad they're doing well." He looked around the backyard for a moment. The swings we used to sit on and talk still over in the corner, being the spot for Steph and her friends now. He walked over and sat on one. "Join me Walsh?"
I went and sat on my old swing, feeling a bit silly. "Steve do you know what Nancy is up to this weekend?"
Confusion. That was all that occupied the boy's face. "Are you two suddenly braiding each other's hair and shit?"
"No it's just. She called and asked me to cover her. She told her Mom that she was gonna be here all weekend. I figured if she was calling me you must be some sort of involved." That was the only connection between Nancy Wheeler and myself. Steve. He just shook his head no, no knowledge.
"Well I was going to ask you what I should do to try to win her back." I looked at him in shock for a moment before shaking my head.
"Steve. I can't help you with that."
"Why?" That was the most defensive tone he'd taken with me. Even before the break, he never seemed to get like that with me.
"Because I can't in good conscience do that to you. And I'm selfish." A mood lightener, blame myself and my flaws.
"Selfish?"
"You think they're just gonna take it sitting down if you disappear? I barely heard an end of it last time." I added a laugh at the end. His eyes seemed to hold an ounce of something. Disappointment? He really wanted my help that bad? I sighed. "However, if I was Nancy and I'd drunkenly called my boyfriend bullshit and forgot, I would want flowers. Flowers, a kiss, and a reminder that he cares. That he doesn't hate me." His face seemed to lift a bit again.
"Come with me to do it?" My face has always spoken louder than my words, and there was no way my face wasn't screaming that he's an idiot.
"Steve I don't think she'd want me there."
"I can't do this without you." I looked at him, him giving me the puppy dog eyes. I groaned and leaned back on the swing, feeling my feet go out from under me.
"You owe me." He hopped onto his feet.
"I'll owe you 15 things of flowers."
"I don't think that'll help my case with Nancy." I followed him back through the house, calling to my parents that I'd be back later and not to wait up. I heard a remark about being safe, and something about being responsible. Steve started laughing, I just groaned and slid into his passenger seat muttering something about him needing to shut the fuck up.
~~~~~~~~~~
I watched as he started to walk up to the door. I was crouched in the back seat, I had insisted just in case Nancy had prank called me, not actually needing me to cover. Instead of Steve going inside he got intercepted by the curly headed one, both of them headed towards the car.
"Henderson?" I questioned as they both slid into the front seats. The preteen looked at me shocked.
"I thought you were looking for Nancy?" That was a fun accusation in the kid's tone. Not an accurate one, but fun nonetheless.
"She was my backup incase Nancy told me to go fuck myself."
"Oh that's why you begged me to come with. You're scared of a girl who's 100 pounds soaking wet. Sure." I flashed him the puppy dog eyes he'd given me and Dustin lost it.
"I like her." I laughed. I didn't need preteen validation, and I didn't know why Steve was so close with the kid but who was I to judge? "Not important now though, we need to go handle Dart."
"Dart?"
"His pet lizard." Dustin scoffed, but I couldn't tell if the kid was playing up his offense or if he was really that bothered by calling a lizard a lizard.
"It's not a lizard." I just looked at Steve as if he was an idiot. Either the kid was in denial or Steve had lost all his braincells.
"How do you know it's not just a lizard?"
"Because it's face opened up and it ate my cat." Steve was a bit stunned, opening his mouth to say something before closing it again and just nodding a silent agreement.
"What the fuck?" Dustin looked back at me then over at Steve.
"She doesn't know about the demogorgon? Does she know anything?" I was very ready to just tune the fuck out but Steve started the car, on route to somewhere I wasn't aware of.
"No, I kept my word."
"Is it gonna kill me?" So long as the answer to that was no I would be able to duck out. To mind my own business and not deal with any of the bullshit that was coming from their-
"Potentially." Fuck.
"Shit, okay I wanna know then." I leaned forward in the back seat, peaking my head between the two guys.
"Well it starts last year, these things called Demogorgons took one of my friends Will-"
"Wait. The fucking demo-whatever the fuck from Dungeons and Dragons?" Dustin's face lit up and Steve just shook his head.
"I know this whole situation is fucked but Steve who is she and why have you never had her around?" Steve just kinda froze, I didn't know why but whatever. None of my fucking business. I prefer to be on a need to know basis, and the only thing I need to know about is the thing that might fuckin kill me.
"I'm Lucy, Nancy doesn't like me. So are we talking about a DnD campaign or?" Dustin just shook his head, glaring at Steve. What had Steve been up too?
"No real life. Last year they took my friend Will and now I have Dart who may or may not be one of them." I just blinked at the kid, absorbing the information. I'm gonna have to break out my old copy of the Monster Guide, but I pretty sure so long as we have enough intelligence within the group we can take it. Though I don't think I want to learn how a death saving throw would go in reality.
"It was a baby lizard like two days ago." Steve finally chimed back in and I just glared at him.
"Yeah and he keeps molting. I don't know how big he's gonna be when we get to my storm shelter." Steve looked like he might barf for a moment, so I rubbed his shoulder for a second.
"We're going looking for this thing?" I didn't want too, self preservation being the main source of my mind your own business mentality.
"Well yeah, we can't just let it terrorize Hawkins." Dustin sounded frustrated, understandably.
"Fuck. I mean yeah you're right." I had never given enough of a shit about this town to think I would be caught in this kind of mess. This kid though? He gave a shit, and Steve gave a shit. Of course he did, Mr Hawkins himself. Thing was, I had no sense of loyalty to this town, I was counting down the days until I could flee and start my life.
"Luce you know he's right, think about Steph." Steve chimed in and I groaned. She wasn't months away from getting out, she still had a few years left. I couldn't fuck her life over.
"Fine let's find this fucking lizard." Steve smiles at me before focusing back on the road. Henderson just shakes his head.
"Dart isn't a lizard." He insisted, and so I just nodded and sat back. I didn't give a shit what the thing was, if it was dangerous then I wanted to know as little as possible. Just enough to keep myself alive. Steph wasn't here, she would be fine. Seemed like a weird secret club to know about this issue, and I really didn't want to be a member.
