Music was playing through the whole house, Jasper and Alice had gone out for a hunt while everyone else sat inside, talking or doing other things. I drummed with the help of a pair of wooden spoons on the counter, while doing so my head nodded to the beat. Two pieces of salmon was cooking in one of the pans, and rise was on the other side of the stove. The whole house smelled of home cooked food, and it only added to the homey feeling.

Das boot began playing and the techno music soon hit the room, submarine sonar sounds accompanied the beat. I grasped a spoon from a ice cream container and munched on it at the same time as I walked around the kitchen and swayed to the heavy beat. The spoon was hanging from my mouth as I looked over the salmon and the rice with both of my hands, and a grin made my lips turn up.

I must look like an complete idiot right now.

I snorted at myself and shook my head at my thoughts, I knew they were true, so I was not denying them. I could be an idiot sometimes, mostly a dumb one, oblivious as fuck and completely confused like a fish out of sea. A light laughter made my shoulders shake and I again shook my head at myself.

Footsteps ran towards the house in the distance and I knew the house would soon be filled with the two teenager vampires I had learned to look at as my own children.

A new spoon of ice cream was placed between my lips and I began to hum to the new song which had started playing. I picked the pan with the salmon up from the stove and began to carry it towards the counter as a person walked towards the stairs with rushed steps. Jaspers once golden eyes were not golden anymore, they were blood red. His face was twisted in agony and pain, physical pain. More footsteps followed his and without a thought on the matter I dropped the pan, stopped with everything I was doing. I did no longer care about the boiling rice, the salmon in the pan or the vegetables in the oven. All my focus was on the broken boy I had come to love as my own son in the span of a few months. I zoomed out of the room and held a hand up for the family that had picked up on what was happening and walked towards him.

"Let me help him."

My eyes did not for once second look over at them, all I could look at was the stairs and his fleeing body. I began to race up the steps and I saw the door to his room shut behind him. I was in front of the door in a second and my knuckles gently hit the wooden blockade that parted me from him. I heard his quiet and hurting whisper, and I knew exactly what he went through.

"Leave me alone."

A soft face took place on me, still I, not so gently, barged into the room and spoke.

"Been there, done that. Not letting you do that to yourself, sweetie."

He sat on the edge of his and Alice bed, his face was in his hands and I saw his shoulder shake from what I knew to be muted cries. I walked up to him and kneeled in front of him, my hands gently grasped his and I removed them from his face. He turned his head away from me and I shook my head at him, grasped his face between both my hands and forced him to look at me.

"Hey, look at me."

He still resisted my grip and I caressed his cheeks with my thumbs.

"Look at me, sweetie."

Reluctantly his head began to turn towards me, his eyes looked into mine and I saw a tortured boy. They were glossed over with venom, and I knew if he had been able to cry tears would have pooled out from his eyes.

A smile turned my lips up and I looked at him with love, my thumbs still caressed his cheeks and I focused my eyes into his now deep red ones. My voice was a mere whisper as I spoke to him, but in that whisper only kindness and love could be found.
