The center of town bustled as time penetrated for the festival. Scattered tents slowly rose as the morning turned golden. The bright colors of the streets were vivid with excitement.
As was the known fact that Frollo no longer discriminated against the people; they were all freely allowed to enjoy the festivity.
A wooden stage sat in the middle of it all, prepped in floral attire and banisters; to perform as well as celebrate people of strange minorities.
Quasimodo watched this display from the bell tower, a sparkle still gleaming for the Festival of Fools. He was indeed a fool for his continued love for the festival despite the actions that were placed.
The town, indeed, no longer labeled him as a monster; he could, decently, fluently tread among the people; he had longed to know all his life.
Though there was still this distant boundary that kept him from getting close.
His fingers brushed softly over the uneven creases of his face; pulling himself away from the window he resumed his task of his carving's hoping to sell them at the festival. Esmerelda had told him he was a skilled carver and could easily make money doing so. But he feared that no one would ever purchase anything from him. But now he had this new sense of bravery that he could. This year will be different.
Esmeralda's image suddenly blossomed to mind as he drew more into his carvings.
Her raven hair tracing down her back puffing up in perfect curls. Her deep green eyes beckoning many to come sink deep. He missed her kind gaze and courageous words. Ever since her marriage to Phebus he had felt distanced from her. She had no time to come visit him it seemed and every moment he would ask why, he couldn't express them.
He understood why she was distant but he wished that he didn't have to feel so...alone.
He sighed, thinking of his dear Esmeralda gazing at the carving in hand, sadly."Quasi?" The sudden voice startled him, causing Quasimodo to bump his head on a low beam of the tower.
Gripping his head he faced the old gargoyle, Laveran. After his recovery she continued laying her hand over his arm.
"Hey, you doing alright? You seem to have something on your mind." His eyes turned down to his work continuing to mold the shape of the girl's waist. Thinking of what he could say to not make himself speak the exact truth.
"Oh no!..well I-I guess I'm just nervous about the festival. You know very well what happened last year." He paused hearing the laughter of the coming crowd. He reflected on that terrible moment. How quickly they changed their impressions of him. He was exactly the monster that Frollo claimed the people to see. Though through the crowd Esmeralda came steadily from the crowd, holding her hand out to him.She had done what he would have expected to do for the deformed image he believed made him.
A smile came to his lips. "Maybe...but I think it has to do with his girl." Hugo came around him laying a stiff arm over his shoulder. Giving him an eyebrow raise and a lip bite.
Quasi looked down in embarrassment,
"Ha! Told you." He pointed at Laveran in mocking who gave him a glare of warning.
"Okay so maybe. I just haven't seen her since her marriage,""I know that she's..., I just..."
A sighed heaved, "..why do I feel so alone?" His voice echoed through the bell tower hearing his voice echo inside the bells. He put his hands over his eyes, slumping.
"So the young lad has finally expressed his motives for affection." Victor entered the room full of dignity.
"What?" His hands moved from his eyes, finding he was surrounded by the trio.
