Sister Hedewig was one of the only ones, who wasn't sadistic or really konservative.
That's why she wanted to help Lana Winters, but she couldn't really.
After the devil aka Mary Eunice told Timothy Howard that Hedewig is lesbian, she had to give up her title and became a patient at Briarcliff. She never got crazy and when Jude and her could get exempt out of this hellhole, she died eventually at the age of 82 in her sleep.
