Zoe settled on a chair in her therapist's office, her face expressionless as she watched Betty pick up her pen and her journal. She gave her the warmest smile ever as she looked up from her journal to Zoe.
" Zoe? What brings you here today?" Betty asked.
Zoe scoffed. " I'm here because you are the closest thing I have to a shrink "
Betty's smiled didn't waver. " I am a shrink" she said laying emphasizes on the " I"
" How was your week?" Betty asked as she fiddled with her ball point pen. She was so calm and composed.
"Stressful as always. Over the weekend, I had an emergency at work and my son had to stay with my next door neighbour...anyways, it was so stressful"
" And how did you feel leaving your son with a stranger? I mean your next door neighbour"
She sighed " I was worried but it turned out I was worried for nothing"
Betty chuckled lightly " I must say you're doing a good job as a mother. Raising your son on your own, working, playing the role of a Father and a mother. It's just amazing"
" Thank you"
" I understand your son means everything to you and I'm wondering if he ever ask about his Father?...
Zoe frowned and looked down at her fingers, not wanting to maintain eye contact with Betty.
" His Father...
Zoe cut her short " Really? Really? His Father, you want to talk about his Father. Goodness, I can't believe this" She thundered
" Calm down. I'm sorry"
" Like seriously...
"I'm really sorry. I'm sorry...
After a short silence, Betty said " How is your family...your parents, what is your relationship like with them?".
She noticed the uneasiness in Zoe. God... This woman has lots of secrets. There was a lot going on with her, she could tell.
" I see, you don't want to talk about that. Then, let's talk about your next door neighbour. Male or female?"
" Male"
" Let's discuss him!"
" Why? Why him?" Zoe thundered.
Betty was surprised at her sudden anger. She's never seen Zoe this angry before.
"Do you like him?"
Zoe scoffed at the question" Do I like him? Is this part of therapy!? You see...I get to deal people like him Everytime...
" I guess this one is special" Betty said
Zoe flared up " What has he got to do with this?! Listen Betty...we've been at this for two months now and we are heading nowhere. Today..this, tommorow that. I'm fed up, I'm really fed up. Do you know the reason why I come here? Because my friend, Binta signed me up for this and she foot the bill...and you sit here asking me silly questions."
Betty was still calm and it vexed Zoe even more.
" You are right, we've been heading nowhere, we've been spinning round in circles and that's because you are not opening up to me. The aim here is to get to date like your friend said....You need to understand that we have a problem here.
