I stayed up all night watching the stars on the steps leading into the courtyard. Jesse tried to drag me to bed but I didn't want to leave. The urge to run after Lestat was too great. Maharet wouldn't let me leave the property. Said it was too dangerous for me to be out at this time of night.

I ignored all her words of advice. My mind can't process anything remotely calm anymore. There is only that sinking feeling inside me.

A great evil is on the way to destroy us all. I can sense the approaching danger. For what reason I cannot claim. Surfacing from within my rusty bones.

"Please, Jake. Come inside where it's warm." Jesse came out again to find me gazing upon the strange family tree carved above the blood fountain.

The lines dated back thousands of years. Starting with the queen herself. The idea of her creating a massive lineage of vampires makes my toes go numb.

"Just a few more minutes." I turned to her. She wears a pleasant flowing skirt with a blush tank top. Her precious red hair was brought back in a claw clip.

I gave that little speech yesterday night. I didn't have the motivation to wear something pretty again on this night. I opted for my patched baggy blue jeans and simple pale pink shirt.

I can't help but smile at the sight of her wondering eyes.

She stood there for a moment to consider my request. "Alright, I'll come for you later," Jesse told me before stalking away back into the manor.

A hard sigh left my lips. I twisted back to continue reading the stone wall, my red hair twisted around my shoulders. It didn't take me long to find Lestat's name. Though he was the last one to appear on it.

No one dared to record Louis or Claudia. And for that, I felt sad. They must have not been important enough to recognize. But they will always be family to me. All these other vampires can go to hell. I'll be sure to open the gates down to those blazing pits myself.

After a while, I sat and leaned back against the wall. Cool stone met my clothed back. The thin shirt I wear doesn't help with containing any ounce of heat.

But I don't dare to care. My eyes start to close oh so slowly. I almost fall asleep when a loud thumping surrounds my ears. The sound is so powerful I rush to cover them.

The Ancients and my sister Jesse rush outside into the courtyard. But none of them seem to be dazed by this outrageous sound.

"What is that noise?" I cry out. None of them are affected by whatever it is.

Jesse leans down next to me. "What are you talking about?" Her worried expression isn't making me feel any better.

But then something swoops down at the front of the house. Suddenly, the strange noise is no longer of concern. I jolt up to take a stand, my ripped black Converse causing me to slip a little. A motherly instinct I once had for Claudia rushed up inside my heart.
