"Does he always act like a tough, douchebag type of guy?"
**Parker
My mom sets down the final bowl of food for us to eat. Everything was made by my grandma, Ma, and my mom. I only helped with making these birria tacos Evan likes.
It was just us. Blake beside me, my mom and Ma across. We eat and chat just like always. Evan has this charm with my mom. His sweet, boyish smile and silly jokes makes her laugh. She's happy that I found someone who is so genuine like him.
"Are you guys excited about college soon?" my mom asks, refilling our waters that are still nearly full.
I roll my eyes playfully at her, "Mom, there's still months till graduation." I reply. Evan chuckles.
"Letters aren't even out yet," Ma adds in and my mom just sighs, sitting down. "Dios mío."
"I know, I just," my mom struggles for the right words to say. "I don't want you to grow up too quickly, mija."
I shake my head at her. She always had this fear, especially when I was a freshman. She was scared, nervous about me. She didn't know what my life would be like. After the incident with my aunt and cousins on my sixteenth birthday, she's been on edge about people ever since.
I take her hand and shake it slightly, smiling as much as I can.
"I'm not gonna grow up too quickly mom. I'll always be here." she smiles at that.
We all continue eating and laughing, just like a couple minutes ago. Evan really wanted to have this dinner with my family and I'm really glad he did. They seem like they really love him. Ma will be a bit to loosen up, but I know my mom is relieved to know I have someone to love and protect me.
Its been a couple months when we started dating. He's like no other boy. He's kind, genuine, aware, and so talented in many ways. He understands me and cares about my family. He's a keeper.
It's like he's too good to he true, but he is true.
The door begins to knock rapidly and I look at Evan confusingly before going to open the door. Evan was in a middle of a story about him and his little sister playing baseball once.
I open the door slowly and I let out a sigh of relief when I see Blake standing there with a bunch of boxes in his arms. He looks at me then hears the chorus of laughter coming from the dining area and his once bright eyes that met mine, turned bored. His eyes are bright blue, but once he sees something he doesn't like, they turn dull. They turn grey. Grey and old.
"My mom wanted me to drop by these extra kitchen appliances for Ma." he says, and I let him in. He sets down the boxes and looks around. The beanie on his head is barely on, and his hood is over his head.
"How's dinner?" he asks, almost like he doesn't even care. I can see the unrelaxed shoulders, the frown on his face, and the tense body language from a mile away.
I sigh, "Good till you interrupted."
He rolls his eyes, sticking his hands in the pockets of his sweatpants. "Well, I'm so sorry for interrupting your boyfriend's time to shine to your family."
I open the door wide for him to get the hint and leave. Blake's been acting like this for a while now. He's been cold, hard to understand, and we've been getting into stupid arguments about shit.
He gets the hint and nods me a goodbye before leaving. I don't even wait for him to get in his car, I shut the door. I shut it tight, leaning against it with my eyes close for a moment. I miss the old Blake. The one who's my best friend.
I miss the guy who wasn't so cold and starting arguments about stupid shit all the time. I don't know what happened. He's fine with Evan, sometimes, I just don't know what I'm doing to upset him.
"Does he always act like a tough, douchebag type of guy?" I hear Evan's voice say to me. I open my eyes to see him leaning against the door frame of the entryway.
I chuckle, going up to him. "He's just in a pissy mood." We walk back to the dining room.
"Like always," I say to myself. I feel eyes on me and I see Ma staring at me with eyebrows raised. She has that look. The look where she knew who it was.
My mom clears her throat before starting a conversation again. "So, Evan. What college do you plan to attend?"
My heart kind of sinks as I think about it.
Evan grins wide, holding my hand. "I really want to go to UCLA. My father went there, my cousins, it's a good place."
Evan and I talked about long distance and college a while ago. I wanted to keep going with volleyball at USC and USC is my dream school since I was small. He urged me to try for UCLA anyway, so I did. But I'm sure that I won't make it. Plus, USC and UCLA are rival schools.
"I'm hoping Parker can be there with me." he kisses my hand and my mom smiles. I can see Ma rolling her eyes and I hold back a laugh.
"If I get in, that is." I add, making him laugh.
"You will."
My mom furrows her eyebrows. "I thought you wanted to go to USC, Park." she looks back and forth at me and Evan. I quickly shake my head.
"I applied for a couple colleges. I'm not really set on one yet," I reply. My knee bounces and I shove the tacos in my mouth.
I wanted to continue volleyball and Evan wanted to do baseball while being at his dream school. Evan was hesitant on me also applying for USC, since scouts from USC has seen me play. I hadn't been signed since letters aren't out but I really am hoping I get into USC soon.
The whole group knows I want to, but he is hiding his disappointment. I don't want to disappoint him.
"Dylan would be proud if you got into USC," Ma says out of the blue. My mom shoots a glare at her and I smile slightly.
Dylan. My oldest brother. I don't talk about him much, but he died when I was 7. Days before the boys left the girls and I.
"Don't worry about it Parker," Evan assures me softly. "I'll be happy for you no matter what."
I smile and kiss his hand. Then we all just continue with dinner, laughing and talking. We talk about prom, and we talk about Evan's family. Dinner is perfect. Evan and I are doing perfectly fine. I hope it stays that way.
