"Did you hear Mother Pearl is doing a closed lightning ceremony for the Trio of Trouble?"
A snicker. A sigh, "Of course. Wouldn't you want your spiritually-defected nieces to have a comfortable space so they wouldn't embarrass you any further?"
Another voice chimes in, laughing smugly, "After the way that wanna-be-witch fled her spirit realm in record time... What was it, three minutes?"
"Try three seconds." A chorus of laughter that resembles a murder of crows. Another sigh, "Oh, how the mighty have fallen."
I tell myself to breathe. I remind myself that I am more than what other people think. My worth is not—
"Oh god and the youngest one and her mood swings! I swear to Trinity if she even thinks of trying to cast near me again"—
I whirl around, fire in my eyes as I hiss, "Say one more thing about me and my sisters. I dare you."
If my words could burn these bitches would be ash. The witches suddenly have nothing left to say. We stay at a cross mate, them pale with fear and me bright with fury. Talking about me and my failed spirit realm was one thing, but talking about Bree? Oh, they messed with the wrong girl.
I whip the matches from my back pocket, grinning as I savor their frightening expression. My finger flips open the book as I taunt, "Oh, you're at a loss for words?" I poke out my lip and raise my weapon, "Let me help you"—
Before I can push them any further a hand slips into mine and the matches are gone. Anubis is pulling me from the mean bitches, sighing heavily as he does so. "I turn my back for one second and you're moments away from burning down the building."
"I wasn't going to burn down the building. I was going to burn the bitches, there's a difference," I huff as I yank my arm from his grip. "And you'd know that if you just gave me a second to prove my point."
"Oh, like you did in Spell Casting?"
I knew the day he was referring to. We were learning about welding light and I ended up wielding a flame through the class and in to the bookshelf. No one was hurt. We lost three books. I got some nasty looks. Typical Tuesday.
I growl, "Will you quit bringing that up? It was an accident."
We start the trek back to my bungalow in minimal silence. He tried to ask me what the girls did to piss me off and I avoid the subject. It wasn't easy to talk about. At least not now. Later, in the dark, when our clothes were off and we were post-mind blowing orgasm, sure I could tell him then. But walking fully clothed through a sun kissed forest with my walls up, not a fat chance.
Once we return to the bungalow I see I'm the last sister to arrive. Salem and Bree already adorn their white gowns for the dreaded ceremony. Their eyes go from me to Anubis. Between their empathy and clairvoyance, the pair probably already know what happened.
Salem's grin is tight as she says, "Aunt Pearl's waiting so we're going to leave soon."
I groan as I climb the stairs, "Yeah, yeah just give me a minute."
