The groundskeeper leaves not long after answering their final questions, her only warning being about the other owner of the house that will stop by later to check on them. Other than that, they are free to explore the Mortley Hill Murder house.
The bottom of the house is falling apart more than the second story. Most of the windows are gaping holes for the night to seep through, the autumn winter chill whispering in and bringing the smell of burning leaves and ice. Lights flicker as they walk beneath, their footfalls echoing in the desolate space.
"Where do you want to go first?" Seth asks, ducking beneath a string of jingle bells hanging from a door jam.
"They were killed in that front dining room." Benji declares, pointing in the direction of the street. "I think we should go there last."
"I asked where should we go first, dipshit."
Someone giggles.
"Really? You laugh at that?" Benji feigns offense, sticking his tongue out at Renata. "You only find stuff funny when you're boyfriend says it, huh?"
She turns towards him, her eyebrows creasing. "What are you talking about?"
"You laughed."
"I didn't." Her brows dip further.
"You did." Seth nudges her. "Come on. Admit that you think I'm funny."
"I'm telling you that I didn't laugh." She frowns. She turns towards Seth. "And you aren't that funny."
"Ouch."
"Wait, if you didn't laugh..." Benji turns towards them, his eyes wide. "Then who did?"
She shrugs. "Maybe it was Phoebe. Only the dead would find you funny."
"Yikes." Benji snorts. "Is that true, Phoebe? Do you find our friend funny?" They stay silent for a few seconds, waiting to hear something again. When there is nothing, he deflates. "I guess not."
"Can we just get this thing started?" Renata asks. She pulls her jacket closer, frowning at the darkness through the window. "I don't like this."
"Are you scared already?"
"Unsettled." She corrects. "Not scared."
"We heard someone laugh, so what?" Seth states. "We came here for more than that."
"If this costs me my sanity, I will kill you."
He winks. "I can live with that."
