One argument with her parents and many missed calls from Addison later, Nessa was finally back at school. Only on one condition from her mother: get Zed to meet the parents. God help.
Zed found her on her way up the stairs and explained everything from the night before. He couldn't help or else he would pretty much end up in jail, which neither of them wanted. After he explained his side, she explained hers which consisted of how her parents won't let her cheer until they meet him.
Zed knew how much cheering meant to her so he couldn't let that happen to her, not to Nessa. After she walked away, he came up with an idea. And nothing, no-one, was going to stop him.
Hours after, Nessa was ready for their date. She and her parents were waiting at the door, waiting for a normal human to ring the bell and pick her up. Nessa knew it wasn't going to happen, but something else happened that shocked her. Zed was standing at the door which had just been opened by her father. He was in a bright pink suit which complimented his dark brown hair. Wait, dark brown?
He looked completely normal, just like a regular human. Nessa was astounded and just stared at him, her mouth wide open. As soon as she realised, she shut her mouth tight and smiled at him.
As quickly as Nessa could manage, she grabbed his hand and lead him off to the ice cream store after seemingly getting the approval from her mother and father.
They talked about his Z-Band, and to Nessa, it didn't sound too good. His wrist was burning red which made her eyes go wide. Zed was sacrificing for her but it gave her a warm feeling in her stomach, despite the bad things it was doing to him. She had never had anyone do something so selfless for her.
They joked for ages about the ice cream flavours, talked about football and discussed their future. Before they knew it, it was almost time for the big Homecoming game.
Nessa was practicing with the cheerleaders and Zed was preparing with the footballers. The night couldn't go any more perfect. Everything was going to go according to plan.
The only thing that wasn't so far, was how the game was going. Seabrook were down by five and Nessa could tell Zed's Z-Band was affecting him. She couldn't help him, and that hurt her deeply. She even came over to check on him but he still hid it. He couldn't let her know how much he was hurting.
Nessa decided to lift his mood before the game resumed and she knew exactly how to do it while getting on Bucky's nerves at the same time.
"Give me a 'zom'!"
"Addison..."
"Give me a 'bie'!"
"You are way too good of a cheerleader to throw your life away, Vanessa." Bucky warned again.
"I'm cheering for a change... Bucky." she said with attitude, shoving him backward.
He glared at her, burning holes into her skull, "Don't do it."
"Give me a 'zom'!"
"Addison!"
"Give me a 'bie'!"
"I'm warning you!" He looked like he was going to explode at any second.
Nessa simply did not listen to him, "What does that spell?"
"One last chance."
Bingo.
"What does that spell?"
Bucky screamed like a toddler, "You're off the team, you freak!"
And as much as Nessa despises her, Bree still came and cheered next to her. Next to Bree stood Addison, giving Nessa an encouraging nod.
The game resumed after the cheering was over and Seabrook was finally catching up. One touchdown and they would win.
Nessa couldn't take her eyes off Zed. Not because he was doing well, but because he was in pain. He looked at her with a sad and pained expression and she instantly knew what was happening. She turned to check on Eliza, to warn her. She was already looking back at her. Their software had been corrupted but the Aceys and it was about to go downhill, fast.
Zed powered on, still trying to prove that nothing was wrong. He couldn't look weak, he just couldn't.
Touchdown!
He did it. Zed crossed the line at the last moment shooting Seabrook High to victory. Nessa just hoped nothing would happen that would spoil it. However, it did.
The players flew off of Zed and yelled in pain. Nessa already knew and so did Eliza. Zed had lost control.
As he arose, Nessa could clearly see his face. That wasn't Zed. It couldn't be. His veins were black and his eyes were red, just like Nessa had noticed before. His screams bellowed across the bleachers, hurting Nessa's ears. The audience began running frantically across the field, trying to get away from the zombie.
Tears pricked Nessa's eyes. Not because she thought he was a monster, but because it wasn't his fault.
She ran away to find Eliza only to notice it had happened to her and Bonzo too. Nessa was puzzled, it couldn't have been Zed doing this. A lightbulb went off in her head. Bucky.
She pelted down the field angrily, trying to find her cousin. It was no use until she ran into Gus. Nessa followed him silently to see if he could find Zed and he did. However, when they got there, Gus tasered Zed to turn his Z-Band back on. Nessa screamed and dropped to his side. Luckily he was okay but Bucky wasn't. Ah who cares about Bucky anyway, right?
"Zed! Zed, Zed, Zed. Take my hand. Everything will be okay. Just listen to me." She tried, stoking his arm. Gus had started locking the handcuffs which made her even more angry.
"No, no, no. Why are you taking him? No, please, Zed!" Nessa shouted. She tried holding on to him, shouting his name, anything. But it didn't work. They were taking him away.
Nessa's dad turned up, trying to keep her calm and block her from moving but it was no use. She wasn't leaving him. Not today. Not ever. Bucky looked shocked and guilty. She thought for a second that he felt bad but disregarded the thought quickly. Bucky never cares for anyone.
Bonzo and Eliza were being taken away too, Nessa could see how much Eliza had been crying. Nessa tried pleading with Gus and Addison tried pleading with their parents but nobody listened. Nobody ever listens. But, Addison and Nessa had a plan. If they take the zombies away, they take them away too.
The two girls ran hand-in-hand to the front of the pitch, facing the remaining audience. All it took was one nod from Addison and they both revealed their blinding white hair. Gasps erupted from the audience but they stood their ground. Nessa screamed, "If you take them, you take us too!"
Boos and yells were thrown from the people, each one of them trying to get the girls to stand down. However, Gus refused to take them and they proceeded to take away the zombies. Zed stared longingly at Nessa with sadness in his eyes.
"You know Nessa, maybe they're right. Maybe we shouldn't be together."
"What? No what are you-"
Nessa was cut off by the officers cramming them into a green van and locking all the doors. Tears threatened to spill from her eyes but she tried to stay strong. Zed instantly regretted what he said, it was in the heat of the moment. He didn't bother looking back as they drove away, he knew Nessa would be looking back. He was right. She was looking straight at them with salty tears streaming down her face. She couldn't stay strong anymore.
Zed was gone. And even worse, he left without saying goodbye.
