"Hey. You made it."
"Yeah, and I'm totally not freaked out at all." Nessa replied, grimacing.
ZombieTown was something she had never seen before. It was dark and grey and horrible. It made her appreciate was she had more.
"You're gonna love this." Zed grabbed her hand and they ran off to the tall building, and into the elevator.
They were on their way up, anticipation made Nessa feel like she was going to explode. She looked over at Zed and he was staring at his Z-Band with a painful expression.
"You okay? You don't look so hot."
"Ouch." He exclaimed with a smirk.
"No, you know what I meant." The two laughed together until she spoke again. "Does it hurt your wrist?"
He paused. "I have to mess with my Z-Band to win games." He said, worried Nessa would judge him for 'cheating'.
But, all she said was, "Isn't that dangerous?"
"Nessa, if I don't win zombies will never be accepted."
She bit her lip as she held out her hair, "I know how that feels."
All of a sudden, the elevator reached the bottom and they could hear faint music coming from outside. The doors opened and it was loud, really loud.
Zombies were everywhere, singing and dancing and partying. They didn't care who was there, they just wanted to have fun and Nessa admired it. She gasped at her surrounded when she walked out and turned around to get a full view of the place and it was electric.
"Hey, it's a chance to get loose and be ourselves," Zed said, run out toward his friends. Nessa was just left in awe, starting to bop a little to the music. He told her about how him winning games was a win for all zombies and it could change their future forever.
"Oh, it's started!" he shouted over the music and ran out of sight.
It was the best party Nessa had ever had. Her and Zed just danced the night away without a care in the world. She had never experienced anything like it before.
When the party had died down a bit, Nessa went to explore and on her journey she found Zed's little sister, Zoey. She was doing the cutest cheer ever and Nessa couldn't help but smile at her cheering for Zed. Once Zoey knew she was there, she had sworn her to secrecy and Nessa complied. They talked about cheer and Nessa found out how much Zoey would love to do it. She just wished she had been more excited about cheer. Nessa wondered if she had actually told her parents what she wanted to do instead of cheer, her life might've been different. But, she might never have met Zed. That's the only thing she can thank her mother for.
Suddenly, Zed came in looking for Nessa only to find her and his little sister playing with her stuffed dog.
"Zoey? Whoa... what are you doing here?"
"Please, I'm not gonna miss another Zombie Mash." she whined, looking up at her big brother.
"Zoey-"
"Come on! Who's a good boy?"
Wait... what?
Zed sighed in reluctance but got on his knees and started pretending he was a dog. Nessa couldn't help but laugh at their antics, Zed was amazing with kids.
Eliza left to take Zoey home which just left Nessa and Zed alone. She realised she didn't take the room in properly when she was playing with Zoey, but when she did, it looked beautiful. There were lights everywhere, brightening up each corner.
"It's a zombie light garden. I hope you like it." the boy next to her said, looking straight into her eyes with a big smile on his face. They went for a "walk in the park", as Zed called it, and walked around the lights, taking in how they made the other's face glow.
Their faces were close together, so close that Nessa thought they were going to kiss. But they didn't, much to her disappointment. However, Zed grabbed her piece of white hair and untucked it, letting it flow out of the clip. Nessa grabbed that side of her head in panic, trying to stop him from looking too long.
"It's beautiful."
He paused.
"You're beautiful." He cupped her face again, their face inches apart. He leaned in, she leaned in.
"ZOMBIES! Show yourselves." The lights turned off and a demanding voice shouted from outside of the room. Nessa searched for Zed's hand, planning to run off together but he was gone.
She scrambled to hide her hair again just in time, before a security guard found her. It was one of her father's police officers.
"Gus?"
"Vanessa? Come on, let's get you home."
Gus led her out of the door and back to their side of Seabrook. Nessa felt terrible for leaving Zed behind but she thought that he probably left anyway.
