Whispers [Snake]

I'd known her for a year. A new maid, she was. Beautiful. Petite. Radiant. Everything I wasn't. I, being a footman, had helped her in her first few days. She'd smile at me and greet me happily. But I could only nod back.

How I wanted to say the same thing back to her....

I had been busy in the gardens with Finnian, the Phantomhive gardener. The flowers were in a wonderful bloom. I sighed silently and watched as [Name] was cleaning off the porch to the acres beyond. She was so angelic in this white sunlight, I could almost-

"Mr. Snake? Are you all right? You look a little fazed." Finnian cut into my thoughts. I blushed and shook my head.

" 'I am fine,' says Emily." Emily had accompanied me into the gardens. Finnian didn't take "no" for an excuse, so he had me wait in the shade while he did some finishing touches.

"It's a lovely day, isn't it, Snake?" [Name] had said. I nodded, too embarrassed to speak to her. She looked out at the shrubs Finnian had cropped and the flowers we had just planted.

She moved and stood next to me. A soft breeze blew between us, and her beautiful strands moved ever so elegantly. I tried my best to contain myself.

"I want to stay like this. With you and everyone at the manor. It's pleasant here." she said.

" 'I'd like to, too,' says Emily."

That night, I wandered through the halls alone. Carrying only a lantern with me, I watched all of the shadows grow and disappear. Suddenly, I heard footsteps that a normal human wouldn't hear. I turned around. " 'Who's there?' says Dan." I yell into the darkness.

I wait until I see a figure reveal itself from the lurking black. "Sorry to startle you. I, somehow, lost my way. I saw the light, so I followed it." [Name] explained, catching up to my side. She looks away shyly. I watch her for awhile. Silence filled the gap between us.

" 'Where are you going?' asks Dan." I interpret. [Name] chuckled.

"Just back to my quarters. I was finishing the linen just now, and I can't believe how dark it has become already." She giggled.

We walked again in silence. If silence was a murderer, it was already killing me. [Name] wanted to say something. I could tell by the sparkled in her eyes. Slowly, her hand reached for mine. I gasped the slightest.

"Sorry. I'm just...lonely... And, I like you very much, Snake." she whispered.

I loved her whispers. Her sweet, gentle voice filled me with happiness. I wanted her near me, to be always with me. Her and her whispers.

" 'That's all right...' says Dan." She giggled again and squeezes my hand.

"I want you to speak for yourself one day. One day, I want to hear your voice. Not your snakes' voices." She looked into my eyes. Her eyes lit up in the moonlight and lantern-light, making them a pale fiery color.

" 'I'm not sure that can happen,' says Dan." I replied. We walked quietly until we reached her own maid chambers.

Ciel had said that women needed their own space. Not like Mey-Rin and [Name] didn't get along, but because Ciel had extra rooms he was willing to give up. I was given a room of my own, so Finnian and Baldroy didn't have to be with my snakes.

Dan slithered down my ear and away back to my own room. [Name] was about to bid good-night, but she pulled me into an embrace. "Good night, Snake. Sleep well tonight."

I couldn't take it anymore. My love for her was too strong. I held her back and squeezed her hard. She chuckled. "I didn't think you'd miss me this much."

"Of course, I'd miss you." I whispered. My voice was quiet, barely there, and almost hoarse. "I want to be with you so badly."

She pulled me into her room. I sat on a nearby chair; she on her bed. "When did you-" She was about to question me about "speaking for myself." And, I was.

"Let me be with you for one night." I whispered. "I want to hear your whispers again."

I had known her for a year. Her in her flesh and soul. Now, I had created the most perfect invention. I have a music box in my room. My room is far away from the rest, and I'm glad I could only hear it alone.

I had heard her whispers that night. I had heard her love for me. I had heard her screams for help.

I sat on my bed. I wound up the music box.

Gentle twinkling could be heard. Occasionally, I would heard her whispers of "I love you." Sometimes, I would hear the whispers of "Why did you do this?"

I had painted the box a beautiful burgundy color. The color of her blood.

I had created the most beautiful invention. In which only I could hear her beautiful whispers.

Something I could not do.
