Katie POV

"Are you awake?" The soft voice of Charlie asked.

"I am now" I replied.

Today I was off on tour alongside Ollie and Charlie. I'd been living with them both since I was 14.

Me and Ollie grew up in the same care home and with him being older than me, once he got out he adopted me. We lived with Charlie, Ollie's friend, and he was like a dad to me where as Ollie was more of an annoying older brother.

"I'll see you in the kitchen in 10 minutes, okay?" Charlie said.

"Okay" I replied.

I lay in my bed, scrolling on my phone, before deciding it was probably time to start getting up.

I headed down to the kitchen to get a glass of water, and both Charlie and Ollie were there smiling at me.

"Here she is" Ollie said smiling.

"Morning" I replied.

"How you feeling?" Charlie asked.

"Good, it feels like I haven't been away for ages though" I replied.

"You'll be fine " Ollie said.

"I'm making some toast, if you want some?" Charlie asked.

"I'm alright, thanks" I replied.

"You need to eat Katie" Ollie said.

"I will, I'm just not hungry right now" I said, filling up my glass of water.

"Right I best get ready" I said, walking out the room.

I ran upstairs, to my bed room and got changed. I neatly plaited my hair and put on my beret. I then ran downstairs and started lacing my boots. Ollie came and sat next to me, and began doing his boots, whilst Charlie (who already had his on) stood and watched us.

I stood up and walked towards the three kit bags which were all lined up in the hallway. I grabbed mine and hoisted it over my shoulder. Both Ollie and Charlie did the same.

Charlie was captain of 2 section where as me and Ollie were in special forces. It was a joint mission, neutralizing the Taliban.

As we got in the car, I sat in the back and stared out of the window.

It took us about 20 minutes to arrive. As we entered Brize Norton Ollie walked off to speak to someone. Charlie placed a hand on my shoulder. I turned around to face him.

"You alright?" He asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine" I replied.

"Okay, just remember you can talk to me, and if there's ever a point on the tour you need me just let me know"

"Thank you Charlie" I said, hugging him.

We walked into the main hanger area were everyone was sitting, waiting for the plane. I walked over with Charlie and started speaking to some of 2 section. Rab, Brains, and I, started talking about the last tour we were on. Charlie then came over to us with a medic I had never seen before.

"Katie, this is Georgie" Charlie said.

"Hi" I said, shaking her hand, forcing a small smile.

"It's lovely to meet you" she said.

"You too" I replied.

We all got settled on the plane and soon after we took off, heading to afghan.

As we arrived in afghan we all got off the plane and headed to our quarters. I'm was bunking with Maisie and Georgie. I got the impression that they both knew each other from previous missions. I had never spoken to either of them until today so it was slightly awkward at first.

We all began to unpack when Maisie began talking.

So your with SF?" Maisie asked me.

"Yeah," I replied.

"Your a bit young for special forces" Maisie said.

"Yeah, I guess so" I replied.

"How old are you?" Georgie questioned, her eyes meeting mine.

"17" I replied.

"I'm guessing you joined at 16 then?" Georgie asked.

"Yeah" I replied.

"What do your parents make of it, you know, you being away from such a young age in such a dangerous place?" Georgie asked.

I stood for a second, contemplating how to answer.

"Um... I, I- don't really have parents" I replied quietly.

"Did they like die or something?" Maisie asked.

"Maisie!" Georgie hissed.

"No- well I don't actually know," I replied, "I grew up in care."

"Oh- was it like Tracy Beaker?" Maisie asked.

"Not really" I replied, half laughing.

We had all just finished unpacking when I had to go for a SF meeting. We had a mission.

The Taliban had a compound were 2 big leaders were working from. Our mission was to capture and neutralize them, gaining as much intel as we could.

After being briefed on our mission that was happening the next morning at 0600 hours, I headed back to barracks. Both Georgie and Maisie were sitting on their beds.

"Where did you go?" Maisie asked.

"SF briefing" I replied.

We all got ready for bed, and went to sleep.
