CHAPTER THREE ━ Halloween
(episode two ; Trick Or Treat, Freak)

HALLOWEEN, ANNALISE'S FAVORITE HOLIDAY. Or maybe it was her second, she couldn't really tell if she liked Halloween or Christmas better, maybe it was a tie.

Annalise and Melanie had been talking about Halloween when Melanie brought up the fact that they both had a free period.

"So?" Annalise asked, not knowing what Melanie meant. "We should go to the library!" The Yukimura said happily, she loved the library. The thrill of reading new books, the smell of them, and how quiet it was, Melanie might like parties but she loved the quiet.

"Come on, don't you want to be smart, like Dylan!" Melanie exclaimed as she dragged Annalise towards the entrance of the library. "I am as smart as Dylan. We both have the same grades." "That doesn't mean you both have the same smarts, come on let's go!"

Annalise would rather be spending her free period listening to The Smiths on her walkman in an empty classroom but no, her best friend always kept her on her toes.

The two finally arrived in the Library when they immediately spotted one of their friends crying in a small study room by herself.

"Please tell me you also see Nancy crying?" Melanie asked and turned to Annalise. The Sinclair nodded, the two began walking towards the room.

"Nance, what happened?" Annalise asked, kneeling in front of Nancy and placing her hand on the girl's thigh.

"It's - nothing, don't worry about it." Nancy lied, Annalise and Melanie exchanged looks. Nancy looked up at Annalise, tears in her eye, some falling on her lap. "I'm fine." Nancy was obviously a bad liar.

"I'm not fine." Nancy hid her face in her hands for a moment before looking back at Annalise who was almost crying herself - she didn't like seeing Nancy like this.

"Me and Steve got into an argument about Barb's death." Just the mention of Barb sent a shiver down Annalise's spine.

"You know how I told you about that dinner me and Steve were going to have with Barb's parents? Well, them not knowing is just too much for me. Them thinking that Barb is still out there kills me, and I feel like Steve just doesn't understand how I feel. I love him, I do, but he has no sympathy for me right now, Barb was my best friend, she was the only person who truly understood me, she was the person I could talk to when I had boy problems or any other problem. She was my everything, and then she died."
