Note: Sorry for the delay! Sigyn's return in the comics, my trip to Barcelone, and the heatwave totally distracted me! But here is the new chapter! Hope you will like it! Please leave a comment ;)
Loki had fallen.
Despite everything she had done, all her efforts, all the love she had given him, Loki had still fallen.
The moment Thor's words had hit her brain, Sigyn had started running to the Bifrost. It was from where he had fallen last time. She had to be sure, she had to see it with her own eyes.
So she ran, quicker than the wind, tears flying from her eyes, her heart hammering in her chest. She could hear Thor screaming after her, the sound of his heavy steps as he started chasing after her, but she did not care. All she needed was Loki, happy and safe, in her arms.
The Bifrost had been broken in her first life. It was not the case this time. Still, passers-by had gathered to witness the scene where Loki the Mad Prince had lost his life. Sigyn wanted to turn them all into toads, but her mind was too busy replaying all those years, decades, centuries she had spent by his side, and where it had all gone wrong, what she had done wrong to lead once again to such tragedy. Or was fate truly unavoidable?
The crowd let her through, whispering as she passed, pitying her, judging her for not being "enough" to save their Prince from his madness...
Well, Loki was not mad to start with... But maybe they were right. Maybe she was just unworthy of him, maybe if she had been a better wife, maybe if she had given him children, maybe then, he would not have jumped...
Did he jump?
In the first timeline, people said he had... Or rather, they gossiped about how Thor or Odin – it depended on the version of the tale- had tried to save him, but he had let go...
But that Loki had nobody by his side, no one to be his true family. Her husband, he knew he had her... didn't he?
She hoped he did.
Thor grabbed her as she reached the edge of the Bifrost, his grip on her hard and shaking. Her brother-in-law probably feared she would jump in despair, wanting to join her husband in death, as her sister Nanna had done with her beloved Baldur.
But Sigyn knew Loki was not dead. She knew he survived this... though he would suffer much worse, tortured at the hand of the Mad Titan. He was to become his prisoner, his flesh abused, his mind tormented, until he finally joined the Children of Thanos, fighting against his own brother, eventually defeated, going back to Asgard in shame and misery, his hands and feet chained, his mouth hidden behind some device her brothers had created and could not stop gloating about.
Her poor love!
She had to save him, at any cost! At least, this time, she knew where he would be, and in company of whom... Monsters and their goons. Her uncle's library had given her much information about them, and she remembered shivering at the thought of Loki, alone, at their mercy. She had promised herself not to ever let him meet his tormenters in this life... She had failed... But she would not fail him again. She would rescue him and bring him home.
But how had Loki fell? Surely he had not jumped?
She hugged Thor to let him know she would not kill herself, but was troubled by one of the Einherjar snickering.
"You should let her join her monster of a husband in Hel, my Prince", the insolent soldier advised Thor, "The bitch failed to give him a babe, but there might be a chance she's pregnant now. Better make sure, and cut off the snake's head while we can. I pushed the mad Jotun into the void, his mate can also have an accident..."
