237 days until competition.
October 31.

I rushed into the library, carrying two cups of coffee in my hands. We all had to come into work on Halloween to pass out candy tonight, so I needed as much caffeine as possible.

I walked over to Luna, who was dressed up in one of those adult bunny costumes. It was on the verge of being a little too adult, if you know what I mean. She looked like one of those anime characters.

"Happy Halloween, boo," Luna pursed her lips as she smacked down a plastic bag full of candy.

"Happy Halloween," I huffed.

"And what the heck is your costume?" Luna laughed as she crossed her arms. I looked down at the costume that I had managed to rush in the short amount of time that I had. I took a plain white shirt, cut a couple holes in it, and stuck multiple cereal boxes with utensils stabbed through the cardboard of each box. After that, I made some fake blood by using corn syrup and food coloring and splattered it all around the shirt.

"What do you think I am?" I chuckled, "I'm a 'cereal' killer."

Luna shook her head, "You are so dumb, do you know that?" I laughed, then walked behind the counter to help pour the bags of candy into separate, cheap plastic pumpkin heads. I glanced at Jack for a moment.

"Jack," I said while looking away from him, "Where's your costume?"

"What are you talking about?" He responded, looking up from his phone, "I do have a costume one."

"Then what is it supposed to be?" I eyed him up and down. He was wearing a white button up with three cut-out circles of black construction paper taped to the side of him.

"I'm three-hole-punched Jack," (haha, The Office reference *wink, wink*)

"Oh my gosh," I rolled my eyes before chuckling to myself.

"{Y/N}," Luna sliced open a bag of candy and poured it into one of the pumpkin heads, "Do you think the kids will mind if it's garbage candy?"

"Garbage candy?" I asked in confusion.

"Yeah," she looked up at me, "You know, like candy that people don't usually like."

"Luna, it's Halloween," I assured her, "These kids are not going to care what kind of candy it is. All they're worried about is getting as much candy as possible."

"Hopefully," she sighed, "When I went to the store today, the only kind of assorted bags of candy that they had left was the ones with Bubble Gum, Tootsie Rolls, and the flavored Tootsie Rolls."

"I actually like the flavored Tootsie Rolls," I shrugged, then grabbed two plastic pumpkins by the handle to take it to our stand outside.

"Well, that's because you're weird," Luna laughed as she grabbed the two cups of coffee that I sat down. She began to follow me outside.

I sat down the two pumpkin baskets in a particular free spot on the tables that we have sat up. Every year for Halloween, we would have a little station to build your own treat bag. We had multiple bowls filled with things like little notepads, pencils, stickers, little skeletons, and spider rings for the kids to pick out. We also had free books laying out, in case some of the kids wanted to pick out a book for themselves. And of course, we would have candy for them too.

I sat down in one of the chairs, then used my knuckle to bang gently on the glass behind me, "Jack!" I raised my voice, "You coming?"

"Yeah, just one sec!" I heard him yell back.

"Here you go," said Luna, as she slid one of my coffees to me. I looked at her as she sipped the other one.

"Hey!" I whined.

"What?!" She shrugged, "I have to have energy for tonight too, ya know!"

"Ugh, okay," I rolled my eyes.

We both waited patiently for the trick-or-treaters to trickle in, as we both sipped our coffee calmly. After a while, Jack finally came outside and sat next to me. Then, that's when a huge crowd of trick-or-treaters began to walk our way.

"Hi, guys," I smiled, as I greeted them.

"Hello," said one trick-or-treater. She was a little girl, about five years of age. She was wearing a bumblebee costume.

"I love your costume," I complimented as I reached into one of the pumpkin heads to hand her a handful of candy.

"Thank you..." she mumbled as she opened her bag for me to place the candy inside.

"Sorry," said a women, which I'm guessing was her mother, "She's a little shy."

"Oh, that's alright," I shook my head slightly, then looked at the little girl again, "Would you like a treat bag?"

She glanced up at her mom, then quickly hid behind her. Her mother laughed a little, then looked at me.

"We would love one," she nodded.

"Okay," I smiled as I took one of the plastic treat bags from across the table. It was a bright orange, with spider designs scattered all around it. I placed one of each items that were on the table inside the treat bag.

"Here you go," I said, handing the little girl the treat bag. She hesitantly took the bag from my hand, then went back to her mom.

"Thank you so much," said her mom, placing one hand on her daughter's back.

"No problem," I said as they began to walk away. I sighed, then turned my head to look at Luna. She was talking to a little boy, who was dressed up as a pirate.

"Did you say thank you?" I heard a familiar voice say. My head perked up like a tiny puppy hearing a rabbit scurry through the grass. I looked over to see Mark, leaning down a the kid who was a pirate. He had one hand on the boy's shoulder.

"Thank you!" He smiled, showing off his missing teeth.

"Mark?" I questioned, looking up at him. He turned his head in the direction in which he heard his name. A look of surprise fell on his face.

"{Y/N}?" I chuckled a little, "What are you doing?"

"Handing out candy, apparently," I smiled, then shrugged. His eyebrows tilted downwards, as he eyed me up and down.

"Nice costume," he pointed at my shirt. I looked down at myself, forgetting that I had a costume on. Utter embarrassment filled my body.

"Thanks," I laughed, "What are you doing here, though?"

"I'm taking my cousin here trick-or-treating," he placed his hands on the boy's shoulders. I looked down at Mark's cousin.

"Nice to meet you," I smiled. He flashed me his toothy grin once more.

"Oh, yeah, I almost forgot..." Mark reached into one of his pockets, and pulled out a purple bracelet, "...You left one of your bracelets at my house."

"Oh," I took it from his hands, "Thank you so much, I've been looking everywhere for this."

"You're welcome," he smiled at me. I placed the bracelet back onto my wrist and looked up at him to smile back.

"Sorry to leave, but we have other houses to get to," Mark leaned down to look at his cousin, "Don't we?"

"Yeah!" He said excitingly.

"See you guys later..." he waved as they began to leave, "And {Y/N}?"

"Yeah?" I responded back.

"I'll see you tomorrow," he said, then turned his back towards me. I smiled a little, before dropping my head and shaking it. I heard Luna gasp from next to me.

"You like him!" She admitted. I quickly turned my head to look at her.

"No I don't!" I reassured her, "That's insane! And ew.."

"Nah, don't give me that bullcrap..." she grabbed the coffee cup from in front of her and raised it to her lips.

"I'm telling you, I don't like him," I responded back, as we waited for more trick-or-treaters.

As we waited, I fidgeted with the bracelet Mark had given me.
