Wires Weaved Into Promises

He doesn't remember much. A few bits of pain, screaming, and horror. His mind can't seem to unlock the memories of what occurred during his youth. Not that Tails minded. He came to the conclusion years ago that he was better off not remembering. It wasn't worth the hassle.

For this very reason, he found annoyance in the fact a random stranger had repeatedly bothered him about his origins. When Tails woke up this day, he didn't envision himself coming across a Saint. An annoying one at that.

Tails was standing in the middle of a broken down market. Rubble and dust surrounded the area. He was in the middle of forging for some food as he had recently been running low on supplies. Tails was busy minding his own business when a certain freedom fighter came along and discovered him. Said fighter was none other than Sonic The Hedgehog himself. The great hero of Mobius and the active fighter against Dr. Ivo Robotnik's army.

The hedgehog had sneaked up on him and asked if Tails needed any assistance. He didn't. The kit was perfectly capable of fending for himself.

Tails had not offered a single piece of dialogue to the blue blur. This didn't deter Sonic from continuing to ask questions and do his best to help anyway he can. Tails at first was taken aback with the sudden burst of energy and how Sonic didn't seem to be frightened by him. After all, he was a Kitsune. A creature that should not be taken lightly. In the deep corners of his mind, Tails battled with himself if he was happy that someone wasn't scared or baffled.

Either way, Tails wasted enough time in this dump and made his way out of the barely standing building. A flash of blue stopped him in his tracks.

"Wow there buddy- Can't have you running off on your own. It's dangerous out here." Said Sonic. He had his arms stretched out to the side to block the kit from leaving. Sonic was greeted by a small nod from the kid before he ignored the hedgehog's attempts and continued to move past him.

"Geez- where are you from kid? What about your name?" Sonic continues to stop Tails from leaving and pushes the kit back a few times. Tails grew more tired of this conflict.

"Y-you-...s-shoul-ld.. w-watch- whoo y-you.. talk.. too.." Tails cursed himself for how hoarse and weak his voice sounded. To be fair, he hasn't used his voice in 4 years, this was to be expected. His attempt at sounding intimidating fell flat.

"Suuure... You definitely need some water dontcha-" Sonic opened a small pouch and took out a small canteen. He offered it to the kitsune. "Look, you can have some of mine. Then when your voice gets better, you can tell me about yourself." Sonic gave him a small smile to encourage him.

Tails for the second time that day was completely baffled. At first, he assumed Sonic would notice what he was or wasn't afraid of him. Now Tails was contemplating the fact that Sonic doesn't even know what he actually is.

The fox tilted his head to the side. The light from behind Sonic began to flicker dimly but Sonic didn't seem to take notice of this fact. Tails eyes began to shine brighter than they were before.

"Y-you... don-n't k-know..." Tails' voice still had the hoarse tone but also seemed to distort at some points.

Tails was taken by surprise once again. Sonic was completely oblivious to the phenomenon that just occured. Maybe he did notice and just didn't think too deeply of it.

"Know what....?" Sonic said, confusion was written all over his face. Tails glanced at his twin tails. It was common knowledge to everyone that to identify a Kitsune, was to count the amount of tails they have. Sonic clearly didn't know of this. The hero also didn't seem to mind the fact one of them was mechanical.

"Oh. What about your Tails?" Honestly the more Sonic was around this kid, the more confused he gets. Sonic came to one of the top dangerous cities to be in to hopefully destroy one of Eggman's bases. The hero didn't expect to come across a kid all by himself. Coming across this kid made Sonic's priorities change. Instead of destroying a base, he'll be getting the fox to safety. If said fox would let him.
