Sylvie and Matt have a heart to heart on the couch, and Kelly has an announcement.
Sylvie sat back into the couch, looking at Matt. He nearly looked surprised that he'd spoken, but she turned to face him.
"Sure, what's up?"
His brow furrowed for a moment, before smoothing out. She wanted to reach over and give him a hug, but she sat waiting instead.
"What you said the day of the fire...what was said today. I just realised, in this job we don't know how much time we've got left, do we?" He spoke quickly, and it took Sylvie a moment to parse his words.
"We don't. If you'd told Otis that that fire would be his last he wouldn't have believed you. I've had a gun pulled on me too many times to count, sometimes I wonder if I'm on my last life." She watched as a flash of anger went through Matt's face at the reminder of how many times she'd been threatened.
"That's my point. I've ended up in hospital more than once, and I've had to come to terms with it. But all of this made me realise if I want something, I need to go grab it with both hands. Sylvie I've got feelings for you. I have for a long time, but they're still there and they keep growing. And if you don't feel the same way that's fine but I needed to —" She cut Matt off, pressing a kiss to his lips. It was short and sweet, but when she pulled away they were both smiling.
"I feel the same way, Matt. And I know it won't be easy, but I want this." He reached for her, and Sylvie moved across, on her knees on the sofa as they kissed properly.
Matt let her set the pace, and she opened her mouth to let him kiss her deeply. She ended up on her back, Matt hovering above her as they made out. Every so often they'd separate for air and he'd touch her nose, her cheek, her forehead, making sure to avoid the bandage covering her stitches. Sylvie had never let herself imagine kissing Matt in person, but now that she was she wondered how she could ever stop.
Once they separated he pulled her onto his lap, holding her close. They soaked in being in each other's arms, the easy intimacy that had developed over close to a year of living together showing itself in how there was no awkwardness after what they'd done.
"I want to take you on a date tomorrow. Can we do that?" Sylvie looked up at him, pressing a soft kiss to his jaw where she could reach.
"Tell me when and where, and what I need to wear?" He repeated her movement, except pressing his kiss to the tip of her nose, smiling as she wrinkled it under him.
"Something comfortable and casual. You're forgetting I've already seen you hungover and sick. Living together has had it's benefits." Sylvie smiled at that, pressing one more kiss to his lips before getting up.
"If I don't go into my room we're going to go too far after a first kiss for both of us. What time are we going out for?"
"Noon? I'll cook breakfast here and we can go then?"
"Sounds perfect."
Sylvie closed her bedroom door behind her, pushing her back against it. Matt had asked her out. They'd kissed. Their feelings were requited. She couldn't fully believe it, and she pressed her fingers to her lips, remembering Matt pressed against them. She pulled up her texts, and got the last text chain with Emily up.
I just got asked out on a date.
What?! With who? Have I met him? DETAILS.
Matt asked me out while we were on the couch.
WHAT?!?! PLEASE TELL ME YOU SAID YES AND YOU'RE NOT HIDING IN THE BATHROOM TEXTING ME.
I'm offended you'd think that of me. I said yes, it's tomorrow.
