"Hey twelve o'clock." Robin pointed to the girls walking in behind Steve.
"I'm going in. Okay." Steve responded while checking out the girls walking into Scoops Ahoy. As he lifted his sailors hat off his head and set it down he said to Robin, "And you know what? Screw company policy."
"Oh, my god, you're a whole new man." Robin joked.
Steve and his newly found friend/coworker Robin, had been previously talking about how Steve's lack of attracting girls wasn't due to his hair (his main attraction) being hidden, it was the fact that he was lying to make himself look better. Steve turned around to the girls and spoke, rather enthusiastically.
"Ahoy, ladies! Didn't see you there." This caused the girls to gasp. But he kept going. "Would you guys like to set sail on this ocean of flavor with me? I'll be your captain. I'm Steve Harrington."
Steve just kept going and couldn't get himself to stop. That was one of what he thought was his flaws. He was confident upfront but was also an idiot. Which in his mind didn't mix well and never worked out for him.
He finally stopped when the girls spoke up. Steve noticed that they just wanted to get their ice cream and leave. Which is exactly what they did. Leaving Steve no time after to "flirt" some more.
When they left Steve was standing with his elbows on top of the glass in front of him with his head in his hands. He stood like that for a second before getting ready to head in the back with Robin right before a voice spoke up behind the front counter.
"Very smooth Harrington." It was Eddie 'The Freak' Munson. He knew this because they had gone to school together before Steve graduated a couple months prior, while Eddie stayed behind.
His whole attire was the polar opposite of the shop around him. While he wore all black, with rings, and boots. The shop around him was full of bright colors. Steve didn't care for his fashion sense. "Hey where do you think you're going. I want ice cream."
"Sorry man, I'm going to take a five. Robin can take care of you."
"Robin came out from the back room. Steve still behind the front counter "Hi Eddie, what can I get you?"
"Aw come on. Harrington's got it. Don't ya big boy?" Eddie had the biggest smile on his face.
Steve really doesn't know why he obliged but he did. He knew the other boy wouldn't give up unless he gave in. "Yeah sure, fine." Robin went back into the back room. Leaving Steve to deal with Munson.
"What do you want?"
"That's it?" Eddie responded.
"What's it?" Steve asked, very confused.
"I saw your big sales pitch to the girls in line before me. Why don't I get it too?" Steve's jaw clenched. "Oh come on Harrington! Have a little fun."
"Fine." Steve complied just so he would shut up. "Ahoy, Munson. Would you like to set sail on this ocean of flavor with me? I'll be your captain. I'm Steve Harrington."
Steve finished his speech with a fake smile to please the boy.
"Okay okay. What seems to have King Steve down in the dumps."
"I don't know what you're talking about Munson."
"Cut the crap I can clearly see you are having a dilemma."
Steve thought very hard about whether or not he would actually tell Muson the reason he wasn't feeling it today. His thinking ended up with him deciding to just tell him. Why? Steve was asking himself the same question.
"I seem to be repelling girls lately. I literally just did."
"Oh yeah. I did see that, but you're telling me Steve 'The Hair' Harrington can't win over a girl to save his life?" Eddie's eyes lit up as he stared at Steve. "That uniform. Let me just say it is just the cutest little thing." Eddie said with what almost sounded like sarcasm. "And is this the hat for it?"
Eddie pointed to the hat on the counter behind Steve.
"It's company policy to wear it. But little Stevie here thought he would attract ladies showing off his luscious locks." Robin announced from the back room, reminding Steve of her cursed presence.
"Oh that is just too bad. I personally think the hat is what makes the outfit. Can I see you with it on little Stevie?" Eddie grinning immensely.
"No. I'm not putting that thing back on, it covers my best feature."
"Please!" Eddie batted his eyelashes."It's company policy! I'll tell your manager if you don't!"
Robin snuck up from behind and placed the hat on Steve's head. Steve was finding himself getting irritated at both of them. He just wanted to go in the back room and not have to deal with Munson right now.
"Look at that. The hat completes the look." Steve had given Munson a look which caused him to continue. "I think it enhances your 'best feature'."
"Whatever. What ice cream flavor do you want, Munson?" Steve said moving on from the conversation. Eddie had surveyed the flavors for what felt like forever, before deciding.
"Cookies and Cream." Steve looked at him questioningly. "What?"
"You didn't peg me for a cookies and cream guy."
You didn't peg me for a guy that had it rough with the ladies. Guess we all have hidden flaws."
"Touché." Steve responded. He started scooping ice cream onto a cone. He felt eyes staring at him. He looked up for the briefest of seconds to be met with Munson staring at him getting his ice cream. He immediately looked back down and hurried to finish getting his ice cream.
"Your total is $1.25."
Eddie dug around in his pockets. He was a few cents short. Steve saw him keep recounting how much he had but every time it came out to be a dollar that he had. He looked genuinely distraught. "Sorry man. I only have a dollar. I guess I can't get my ice cream after all."
Steve once again thought long and hard about what he was going to do next. He thought he could just take the ice cream back and turn him away. He thought he could give him the ice cream and pay for it. He even thought about throwing the ice cream right in the guy's face.
It turns out he decided to go the nice way about things.
"You know what. It's alright. I'll pay for the rest of it."
"No way man. Are you sure?" Eddie looked extremely relieved.
"Yep, don't worry about it."
"Thanks Harrington I owe you." Eddie said, licking his ice cream staring straight into Steve's eyes. "You know if you ever want to hang out and need a little dope-amine, I'm around. You know, if the ladies aren't keeping you too busy. See you around Harrington."
Steve knew what he was talking about. Eddie Munson was a known drug dealer at Hawkins High. He was trying to offer him drugs.
He walked away leaving Steve to stand there awkwardly.
"Hey Dingus!"
Steve turned to see Robin holding up a whiteboard. Drawing a tally under the 'You Rule' side of the board. She beamed as Steve flipped her off and turned back around to see the boy from before walking away licking his ice cream cone. Almost out of sight, but not before he turned around looking directly at Steve, and did what Steve could have sworn he imagined, Eddie 'The Freak' Munson winked at him. Steve didn't realize it but there was a smile on his face. An actual genuine smile.
As Steve snapped out of it, he cleared his throat.
"I'm gonna go on that five now."
"You go do that....big boy." Robin winked.
