With a worn out huff, you slump forward on the desk using your forearms as form of cushioning. It's been hours of Mitsuri's endless rambling— half of it not even relating to what Mr. Tsugikuni had tasked her to help you with. The sun had began to set about ten minutes prior to now, but of course Mitsuri has yet to notice.
"Forgive me for interrupting you, Mitsuri, but shouldn't you be heading home soon? The sun is setting and I'm sure you're just as bored as I am." she peers down at you with slightly surprised eyes, quickly pulling out her phone to check the time.
"I'm so sorry, y/n! Have I really been boring to you! I'm sorry, I really am! Let me leave immediately!!" she frantically gathers all her belongings, mumbling apology after apology with an evident frown. She couldn't believe herself— not only ruining your afternoon because of her stupid mouth, but also dissappointing you when she's been working so hard to do the exact opposite. She'd tried her best to be exciting, interesting, and maybe even a little too outgoing just to give you a good time, but what she hadn't realized was that wearing a fake mask wouldn't always be in her favor.
Though it was hard to understand that, because for her whole life she'd been doing nothing but trying to please others.
And it's not unusual for Mitsuri to be talkative— in fact, that's what she's most known for throughout the school and her family. But, for some odd reason she'd never really enjoyed talking with others as much as she seems to with you. Even since you were a young kid, you've always been more of a listener rather than a speaker, preferring to observe rather than converse— so it's natural that you and Mitsuri's personalities worked well with each other. She'd have someone to entertain while you had someone to entertain you, which left the both of you satisfied. On most occasions, that is.
"..Mitsuri?" she pauses, attempting to swallow down some of her guilt. It was such a small, stupid thing to get worked up over, yet here she was. "I'm not bored, I was lying Mitsuri. I'm sorry.. I just assumed you might want to leave since it's getting late." you can't help the small frown that creeps upon your face. You'd had no idea of how much your seemingly meaningless words had affected the girl, or how much they even meant to her.
"No, I understand. A-and i'm sorry, i'll leave now. I'm okay!!" her voice cracks in the middle of her sentence, making it obvious to anyone that she was straining herself. Seeing Mitsuri in such a state because of you had caught your breath in your throat, leaving yourself to feel just as guilty as her— if not more.
"I.."
You wanted to say something to her. To apologize. To lighten the mood. To ask her to stay for just a bit longer.
"I'll see you on Monday?"
She finally turns around to look at you, but her expression is unreadable. She was a mix of surprise and sadness, maybe even some disappointment if you looked hard enough. "Yeah.. see you. Finish that homework, okay?" she gave a plastic laugh before heading toward your door. say it, y/n. apologize. she's obviously upset, why aren't you helping her?
Silence followed as the girl left your room.
— Over the weekend, you had done nothing but lay in your bed, scroll through Tiktok, and follow up with the group chat. With almost nothing to pass the time mitski had turned into your 2 day go-to.
