A loud bang wakes him up. He is sure that the new tenants in the flat upstairs have arrived. The Adams family, or maybe Cooper. Louis can't remember the last name the doorman whispered to him the night before. His eyes try to adjust to the light. For a moment, just for a small moment, he is startled by the dead weight beside him.
After Collin had spent so many nights on the couch watching TV, Louis had forgotten what it felt like to wake up next to him.
The thought makes him shudder, remembering his college years when he had to spend hours studying in the library.
The beautiful librarian named Rose, a woman in her sixties who always had a gentle smile on her face, interrupted them.
"Stop studying so hard, folks, and stop talking about the people you slept with last night. I'm sure you want to hear one of my stories."
Louis' eyes burn after several hours of reading. He blinks and watches as everyone in the room settles around the librarian. He puts aside his book and decides to take a short break to listen to her. If someone else had interrupted them they probably would have been annoyed. They had an important exam the next day, no time for love stories.
But it was Rose, pretty Rose who squeezed their cheeks and allowed them to talk too loudly when they were supposed to be studying. She had become special to everyone.
"When I was Matt's girlfriend," Rose began, a dreamy smile on her face, "He was always sneaking through my window."
The hustle and bustle of college kids filled the place after that. Louis rolled his eyes at the sounds of derision from his classmates. They couldn't be more immature, really.
"Don't think bad, guys," she chides, "We'd spend our time listening to music, vinyls that my good Matt borrowed from the little shop where he worked."
Louis is sure he'll fail his history exam, but at this point, it was the last thing on his mind. He's always been a fan of love stories, happy endings and fairy tales. All thanks to growing up reading stories to his little sisters. It didn't matter that they were already asleep halfway through the story. He would finish the book because he simply couldn't wait until the next night, too intrigued by whether or not Cinderella could tell Prince Charming that the glass slipper belonged to her.
He's a hopeless romantic, no doubt about it, but that's something he'll never admit out loud.
"One night, we inadvertently fell fast asleep," Rose's eyes sparkled brighter than usual after those words, "The next day I woke up with Matt's arms around my waist. I was so nervous that my mum was going to find out Matt spent the night with me, but the butterflies in my stomach were crazy," her smile grew, "So I made him jump out my window."
Once again, the room was filled with giggles, all infected with the sweet old lady's trademark good humour. She smiled at the memory and then changed her countenance to a serious one.
"But after that day I couldn't sleep well, sleeping next to Matt's body that night had been fantastic. It felt like it was the right way," Rose murmured, "The right way things should go."
"God, Rose, this story is too good," a girl, sitting on the floor with her face resting on her hands, broke the small silence that formed, "All your teenage boyfriend stories end rather tragically, what happened to this Matt guy?"
"This isn't one of those stories, sweetheart," Rose takes a deep breath before continuing, "The little boy who snuck through my window is my husband, my dear husband Matt."
Sighs were heard from Louis' companions. Some of them even clapped.
"That's today's lesson, darlings," she eventually said, getting up to return to her place at the reception desk, "No matter how many people you sleep with, once you sleep with the love of your life, there's no way your body can forget it."
