You Accidentally Hurt Him

It had been a relatively normal day for the most part. You stayed inside until the sun went down, then went out to play in the yard of the Butterfly Estate. You were playing a game of tag with Rengoku, it was innocent enough.

However, it took a turn for the worse when Rengoku scooped you up in his arms as a way of 'tagging' you. Not only did it startle you, but it reminded you of the days before you met Rengoku. How whenever you tried to run, you were always caught and dragged back to your awful home. You panicked.

You quickly turned yourself, punching him directly in the face. You didn't even mean to, it was just a reflex. You realized what you had done only seconds after you attacked. Covering your mouth with your hands, you let out a tiny gasp.

'He's gonna kill me!' Was the first thing you thought.

"I-I'm so sorry, Mr. Rengoku! I didn't mean to!" You apologized quickly, your usually soft voice now sounding even more meek and timid. He blinked in confusion, before beginning to laugh.

"My goodness, for someone so tiny you sure do pack quite the punch!" He grinned. You interpreted that as 'Man, that really hurt!'. This caused you to start crying.

"Oh, (Y/N)! You needn't cry, I'm just fine! I'm impressed more than anything!" Rengoku smiled, gently patting your head.

"You're not mad?" You asked quietly. He shook his head.

"Of course not, sunflower!" He shook his head, setting you back onto the ground. He then gently plucked your hat off of your head, placing it onto his own head. It was far too small for him, but it was funny to see the Flame Pillar with such a tiny hat on his head.

"Now, you're it!" He chuckled, running off. You let out a short giggle, before running after the Pillar.

This was always something you appreciated. Rengoku, no matter the situation, understood you. He knew you didn't mean to hurt him. However, your reaction still worried him.

He wondered why you flinched so violently, and immediately acted to protect yourself. He was suspicious about your past...

Just what had you been through?

Whatever it was, Rengoku knew that he wanted to protect you from it. He would risk his life to keep you safe, he felt the need to defend you. However, while he was deep in thought, he hadn't noticed that you had disappeared. Until you suddenly jumped at him, hugging onto one of his legs.

"Tag." You said bluntly. He snickered, lightly patting your head.

"You got me." He chuckled.
