Chapter Four

The walk home was less exhilarating than kicking him had been. If this were a fairytale, I’d be telling you all about how Alex chased after me, kissed me under the moonlight, and promised to never leave me alone again.

But this was reality. And in reality, I don’t think he would be able to chase me down. So he settled for calling.

“Summer, wait!” I, of course, didn’t. I straight out sprinted until I got to the familiar sight that was my house. The house he had come to when he was drunk. The house I had kindly let him stay the night at when he couldn’t face his. But enough about blasts from the past. I needed a fucking cigarette. Pronto.

So, I gathered all the balls I could manage, which weren’t very many, seeing as how I’m a chick, and walked through the big, black front door. As predicted, there was my mother, chillaxin’ on the kitchen counter, cigarette in hand.

I wasn’t going to go all mushy or anything, but I missed my mother. She wasn’t really around much, because she had found love. It took away from Summer and Mom times. Well, you know what? Fuck love! Love could’ve kissed my systematic ass for all I cared.

However, it was nights like these that I had missed most.

“Hey.” She greeted me as I stepped through the threshold. We weren’t very mushy, or fancy, for that matter.

I walked over to her, grabbed the cigarette out of her hand, and took a drag. “Hi.”

She eyed me like I had just stolen her baby, before lighting up another. “How was the date?”

“Dunno. How was the date?” Hearing the same question twice drove her bananas.

That time, she remained perfectly content, knowing what day it was, and knowing how I felt about it. “Same shit, different day honey. You score any good numbers for me?”

She was joking, of course. Still, I replied. “Nah, I wasn’t necessarily checking out the drooling forty year old virgins.”

“Me neither.” She giggled. The silence that ensued was enough to kill a bull. Eventually, after grabbing one more cigarette and a lighter from her, I trampled up the stairs to my room.

The thing waiting for me up there was something from a horror movie.

“Summer.” Alex spoke breathlessly, as he sat on my bed like he owned it. Cigarette hanging from my slightly ajar mouth, I looked him over once, lit up, and started to walk back out. Not that he would let me get far.

“Wait.” His hands looped around my small waist, and I almost whirled around and put my cigarette out on his perfect face. Right in his eye. Almost.

“What?” I snapped, annoyed. “And why the fuck are you in my room? I thought our little meeting would let you know that I have no desire for us to be friends ever again.”

He gulped, and let me go so I could face him. “Yeah, it did. I just came for an apology.”

            “Okay, start apologizing.”

“I meant that you give me one.” His tone was soothing, but I knew him well enough to know he was in pain still.

I almost combusted, “Are you fucking serious? You bastard!”

He held his hands up, “Lower your voice.” Then, his nose scrunched. “Could you put that out?”

“Which eye would you like me to put it out in?” I taunted, “Your left or right?”

Another gulp, his Adam’s apple quivering. “Wow, you sure changed.”

“Can we not so this now?” I yawned. I didn’t trust this fuckface in here when I slept.

He grasped my hands in his, “Meet me for coffee tomorrow.”

“Boy, you sure are treading on thin ice with all these demands.” I tossed down my cigarette and stomped it out. My room was already a mess. Not that I cared.

He rolled his gem – like eyes. “Please?”

I surprised both of us by uttering one more word that I never would have otherwise. “Fine.”
