I turned to Jaden and his eyes were now wide and awake, it was like all the soberness came back to him at once. Without hesitation he grabbed my hand and galloped through the woods past the lights towards the driveway, I was running behind him keeping up as fast as I could.
"Jaden! Slow down!" a bright light shined in my face but quickly disappeared. I couldn't see anything but darkness until we stopped and I was forced onto the ground.
"Sh!" he whispered. Keeping his back to the tree, he sneakily looked above, then taking the top layer of red and yellow hoodie off, he had another underneath which was black. Why does he have two hoodies on? He handed me the hoodie and I followed him as he put his hood over his head. I figured he knew what he was doing, and I figured if I stuck with him, I could make some smart-ass story up to save both of us. I looked behind at the cops a good distance away, then recognized one of the faces.
"Jaden, isn't that your dad?" a dark-skinned man had a flashlight in one hand and a walkie-talkie in the other. Searching around the woods.
"Yup." Jaden sounded like he knew to expect this, but his face looked so scared.
"Oh, god. Great." I said slumping on a rock.
"Okay, look. My dads busted one of my parties before, he's never caught me. If you do what I say we'll be fine."
I figured I'd trust Jaden, but I didn't trust that instinct to do so.
"Okay, so then what?" I whispered as I peered behind the muddy tree we were hiding behind from Jaden's dad. I never thought this was how I was spending my Friday night.
"We wait," he whispered back. I looked over to him and scoffed.
"What?"
"We wait!" he said again.
"No! They'll find us and then what, genius. They check us for alcohol, drugs, you get busted and I get busted for being here, and your Dad will kill you for throwing this thing and being high!"
"Keep your voice down." he said from behind clenched teeth.
I huffed at his laughable plan and looked around for an escape route.
"Did you come in your car?"
He nodded.
"Where?"
"The parking lot." he said in a duh voice.
"Let's go." I stood suddenly in the dark air but Jaden grasped my wrist pulling me down.
"What no! They'll see you and trust me you cannot outrun the cops." he had a point, although the cops were not far, if they heard or saw us, we'd get caught.
"Then let's not let them see us. We can not stay here, trust me they'll find us."
"And they won't if we drive away? No, we have to stay here."
"Jaden, I know I've never been in this situation before and you think I don't know how to deal with this, but I think you should trust me right now, please. We can make it."
I stared at his side profile, he bit down on his lip looking around us. He looked like he was thinking for a while until he finally started to rise. Now it was my turn to grab his hand, I did so and started through the woods, him trailing behind me, a few branches hit me in the face but we lost the red lights shortly after running away.
