"So Kiara Elise, yes?" I nod with a small smile at the blonde lady dressed in formal wear with a white coat covering her shoulders.
"Great. Now, I want you to tell me what made you think you need a therapist." she says. I swallow as I think of what to say.
"Um. I have a brother." I start from the beginning. "He's three years older to me. He and I were never close. My mum died when I was ten. Ever since, my brother has been..." I pause, gripping the chair.
"Take all the time you need. If it's too hard-"
"He hit me. He harassed me. He abused me." I say, not bothering to look at her. That little feeling of feeling ashamed resurfaces again and I feel it consuming me.
"For how long?"
"Since I was ten" I reply.
"And now you are?"
"Twenty-two" I instinctively wipe my tears.
"Have you told anyone? The police? A friend?"
"Harry. He knows."
"Is he your boyfriend?" she asks.
"No. I like him though." I blurt out and gasp at the fact. The lady, Ariana, smiles as if she knows what I'm feeling.
"How long have you known him?"
"Since last year. November. He saved me. I was running away from my house" I can't even call my house 'home'. "And I met Harry. I ran away again though. And then some men found me, by the street in a tunnel. Harry beat them up. I don't know how he found me but that's what happened. He called the police and then took me to his house. I haven't left or ran away ever since. I got a job in January. I was doing really good. I was happy. Harry made me feel safe. He made me feel happy. But then a few weeks ago, I met my brother. He assaulted me and I think that sums up why I'm here today" I finally conclude what basically is my life story.
"What are you feeling now Kiara?" she asks carefully.
"Nothing. I don't know.." I admit. She nods understandingly.
"Can we talk about Harry then?" she smiles. I laugh.
-
"So how did the appointment go with.. What's her name?" Harry asks. He picked me up from the clinic.
"Her name is Ariana. I think it was good. She's nice" I tell him with a smile.
"That's good to hear. You can always tell me if you don't feel comfortable talking about the appointments, okay? Or if you don't like going there, if you feel it isn't helping." He says and takes my hand in his, rubbing his surprisingly soft thumb on my skin. I smile at the comfort, even if it's just a small gesture. "So what do you think of going for an early lunch?" he asks a few minutes later.
"Sure. I'm hungry" I say with a laugh. Harry glances to my side for about two whole seconds and then looks back to the front smiling.
"I can't remember if i told you something about going out with the girls for the holidays" I bring up.
"I vaguely remember you mentioning something like that," he says.
"Okay. so we are planning to stay at Georgia's beach house for about a week. That's next week. So we leave Sunday night, and then come back the next Sunday. She and Anthony are moving in a few months to Vegas." I tell him.
"Oh, are they getting married?" He asks the same question I had in my mind when I heard the news.
"No. Anthony got promoted to work in Vegas. So I'm assuming since the two are inseparable, Georgia might have made plans and got a job there too so she isn't far from him." I say. "And you'd be gone too right? With the boys?"
