Breathing in the late summer air, I step onto the busy New York sidewalk. My feet ache from standing at the busy diner near my apartment for the last twelve-hour shift. I'm rushing to make it to my boyfriend Matteo's work today. It's our first anniversary, and he's stuck working late, so I want to surprise him. Rounding a street corner, my phone starts ringing.
I quickly press it to my ear and mutter a panting, "Hello?"
"Hey, love!" My best friend, Tamara, shouts.
"Hey T, what's up?" I ask, pulling the phone away from my ear a bit.
"Are you at his work yet?" I roll my eyes at Tamaras' obsession with my love life.
"I'm rounding the corner to the building now."
Matteo's family owns one of those popular nightclubs, among many other businesses. Which means he never has to worry about money. Why is he dating some small-town waitress? I ask myself repeatedly.
"What did you end up wearing?"
"The little black dress. I barely had time to change. "
"Good choice, I love that one!"
"Thanks. Looks like the place is mostly dead. I mean, Matteo did say they were having a private event tonight."
"So sneak in."
"I can't just sneak in. That's stupid."
"What's stupid is getting all dolled up to surprise your boyfriend and chickening out."
I paused for a moment and sighed, "Rude, but much needed. Bye, love you." The dial tone signaled that she had hung up.
Then, an opportunity arises when I see a group of girls being escorted through the side entrance. I grab the door before it can click shut and almost jump in excitement.
It's dark, which is my only thought as I follow the hallway. I take a side hallway that leads to Matteo's office, and when I open the door, I wish I had never come. Ignorance is bliss, right?
