*Peeta's POV*
"How did training go today?" Haymitch asks later at dinner.
"Fine," Katniss mumbles.
"It was great. I met this guy named Eric who's strong like me. I think he could be a great ally in the Games," I say.
"We don't need allies, Peeta," Katniss snaps.
"I'm not sure I agree with you-"
"Obviously," she says before I can finish.
I take a deep breath. I know Katniss is stubborn and I have to be patient with her. "Maybe when we're in the arena, it would be nice to have someone who'll have our backs."
"So what? We fight off the other tributes and it comes down to us and our allies? You'll have to murder your friends, Peeta. And then live with that for the rest of your life. Do you really want to go through that?"
"No, but-"
"Then stop making friends and focus on your own skills. You'll do a lot better that way."
"Fine," I say, just so she'll stop criticizing me.
