"Who was getting married?" Genevieve asked Gracey.
After Gracey and Genevieve climbed the stairs, They were now in a what seemed to be an endless hallway.
Gracey kept searching for the right room, but he looked back at her and said, "George and Constance. But you see... Constance's husbands have a problem."
"Oh, what is it?"
"Staying alive." He laughed at his own joke.
Gracey finally found the right room. Since he being the master of the house, he has the keys. But, it was only one key. When he was alive, he made all of the doors locks fit to a skeleton key-a key that would unlock all doors.
"Why do you have only one key?"
He unlocked the door. "Why do you ask so many questions?"
Gracey allowed Genevieve in first and he followed her in, shutting the thick door behind them.
"Whose room is this?" Genevieve gasped.
"Well, it was mine." He says.
Genevieve allowed herself to look around, his bed was massive. It had velour and silk bed covers. It also had a carved headboard that looked like a roaring ocean.
Gen got close to the headboard and noticed a tiny ship on one of the waves.. "You were a sailor?"
Gracey took a hat out of a wardrobe and said, "Captain on the S.S. Trout. My brother died at sea, but I came home to the family fortune."
I just then remember the Gracey legend. Jeffery told it as a story before everything happened.
I was putting my makeup on when Jeffery told it.
"Your parents died in a shooting at a play, your brother died at sea, and you—"
"I died of unknown causes." Gracey puts the hat back. When he turns around, he looks angry. "I died, here. In this empty house, all alone."
Genevieve is quiet.
Gracey shakes his head. "I don't even know where my body is. Even if I did, I wouldn't salt and burn it."
"Why?" Gen moves away from the bed and goes to Graceys side.
He looks at her with a sad smile. "Somebody must take care of the manor, right?"
Gracey sighed. "Now, let's find you the proof you need."
———-
Genevieve went to a jewelry box on a table near the windows curtains which were drawn closed.
A soft light was on near the box.
I looked to Gracey to ask but he just nodded.
I opened the box to find various broaches and rings, but one stood out to me.
It looked like the Gracey family crest. A cursive G on the ring, with blood red jewels surrounding the G. I turn to Gracey to tell him I have what I need.
He looks at me and smiles. "Here."
He bends down on a knee and takes the ring from me and slips it on my finger. It surprisingly fits my pointer finger.
"Thank you." I smile. "Thank you for not killing me and allowing to dance in your house."
He laughs, "It was my pleasure."
He takes my hand and leads me to the door. "Come, we must be going. I sense more mortals on the grounds."
——
And indeed, there were more mortals on the grounds. In fact, the mortals that Gracey sensed were Genevieve's friends.
Jeffery got out of the car and opened his trunk. He got out an iron wrench and handed James his sword. James looked the part of a confederate soldier, and now he was prepared to act like one.
Jane and Charlene changed into jeans and t-shirts, they stayed in the car.
"They couldn't have been gone this long, something must have happened." Jeffery muttered as he walked up the long drive to the manor. James followed in suit. He knew how stupid his ex-girlfriend was. Katie started stuff, bad stuff, that Jeffery always ended up fixing. But Jeffery knew that they both were stupid.
They saw that the massive wooden doors were shut. Were they locked?
James had his hand on his swords hilt.
"Okay gorganto, your time to shine." Jeffery said sarcastically.
James smirked and kicked in the door.
