We walked back, my pockets full of gold to do much more than walk. Eleven explained what happened on the way back, and then asked me out on another date. I said yes.
Oh, and she did bring the bike back, don't worry.
"Seven sort of evil exes?" Mike exclaimed. "What kind of fairy tale bullshit-"
"Mike shut up!" Lucas shouted over him. He had his head held in his hands. "What do you mean, she burst into a thousand coins?"
I scoffed and pulled out the cloth bag full of gold. "A thousand gold coins."
"Woah is it real-" He picked up a few letting them clink back into the bag as he dropped them. "It's heavy."
"I don't know."
"Wait, Eleven dated Chrissy Cunningham?" Mike continued. "The cheerleader?"
"Yeah, in fucking kindergarten. Apparently, that counts."
"How did she have seven exes?" Lucas asked.
"She gets around," Mike replied.
"Yeah, and that's fine. I'm just kind of tired of hauling this fucking bag of coins all over. It's gigantic." I added.
"Is it real gold?" Mike asked.
"They can't be real," Lucas said. "They're too light."
"Bite it. That's a good way to test it, right?" Mike asked. He picked up a coin and mimed taking a bite out of it.
I shrugged and picked up a coin, digging my fingernail into the surface. It's the same thing as biting it, just less germy.
"What?" Mike grabbed it from me, inspecting it. "Holy shit! It's real!"
"Really?" Lucas took it from him, laughing. "Oh my god!"
"There's no way, gold is much heavier," I said. "How heavy is one of these?" I handed it to Mike, who scrambled to find a scale. He eventually left his room and went downstairs.
"Are you sure you counted right?" Lucas asked.
"No, El just said there were one thousand-"
"El?" He smiled. "Where'd that come from?"
"Her name, dumbass." I turned back to the bag of coins. "I don't know if those numbers are right though."
He shrugged, then checked his phone. "I've got to go to work in half an hour."
I nodded, turning to the stomping footsteps outside the room.
"Max?" Mike stood in his doorway, still holding the coin. "This is one pound."
"What?" I took it from him. Just a single one of them felt like it weighed nothing. "That's impossible."
"No, it's really not." He muttered, grabbing a few from the top of the bag. "This is ridiculously heavy."
"There's only like, fifteen." I protested.
"Let me see." Lucas held out his hands while Mike dumped them in his outstretched palm. His hand immediately fell. "What?! Max, how were you carrying around a thousand of these?"
"I dunno." I shrugged. "That bags only half of them though."
Both boys eyes went wide. "There's no way."
"Come on, if one of those coins is a full pound, that means I've been carrying around like five hundred pounds of gold." I took the coins from Lucas and put them back in the bag.
