The end of a long snowy winter was in sight. It was nearly the end of February and we hadn't seen Murga or the Bunglers for weeks. Nary a sign of my uncle Dunc, or Triple Oh, or Yonnie and Treeka either. And Dr Zhang was out of town on business. Absolutely nothing had happened (well almost nothing) for nearly a month. It was creepy.
When I moved to Ottawa, I had expected my new school to be as boring as the previous one in Toronto. But Dr Zhang, one of my teachers at Silverwood School, had invented a quantum computer and a time machine.
Murga wanted the a secret encoded into my DNA by my scientist grandfather in 2160 CE and my father had taken me to the present time to protect me from Murga. After Murga found out where and when I was, he abducted my parents as hostages and tried to kidnap me.
After my parents disappeared, I had moved in with my grumpy Grandma in a downstairs apartment in the old house at 69 rue Sumac street in Ottawa, Canada's capital city.
Dunc, or Duncan McPhun, was a genuine talking, moon walking, genetically enhanced Canada goose. He had been hatched by my maternal grandfather, Alastair MacPhun, and educated in Scotland where he had acquired his Scottish accent. He thus claimed the role of my guardian goose uncle. My grandfather had found him a job with Triple Oh (Time Agent Olaf Oliver Onderdonk) as an undercover goose. Dunc was now assigned as my security guard, while Triple Oh was hunting down the notorious time criminal, Murga.
Adding to the confusion, Yonnie and Treeka, two computer algorithms posing as teenaged girls, claimed that Dr Zhang's computer was their great mother, Mandia. We almost believed them, after the Bunglers destroyed Oppy and Yonnie and Treeka recreated her.
In the process, my new friends, Licia Hu and Miguel Griego, and I had been dumped into one adventure after another.* Licia and Miguel were with me on the Titanic when it sank, we had been pressed ganged onto HMS Curious with Denny Vernier, one of our teachers, and experienced a curious adventure with James Watt, the famous engineer who made the Industrial Revolution possible.
We had also been kidnapped by agents from Dark Fire Data (aka the Bunglers) who attempted to export us to the USA. In between adventures, we barely had time for homework.
Because Grandma was a fitness freak and always on a diet she bought only the minimum amount of food for survival, so I spent a lot of time with her two elderly friends who lived in the apartment upstairs. Emma was a superb cook who was making me and my dog, Pacman, fat with gourmet sausages and creamy mashed potatoes she called bangers and mash. Beryl was a beaver trapper, a gun nut, a member of the guerilla grannies and my self appointed bodyguard.
But now, we were enjoying the late winter celebration of Winterlude in Ottawa, admiring the ice and snow sculptures, skating on the Rideau canal and eating beaver tails (a sort of squashed donut) with maple syrup.
