Part 6 - Blooming interruptions

Scott and Serge stood up looking bewildered as Denny returned to his chair.

'You see what I have to put up with?' he asked them. 'It's hard to get any work done with all the blooming interruptions.'

Pacman was in his threat posture and Beryl was pointing the Uzi at Murga. 'No tricks, big guy. I remember the last time we met. You knocked me out with some kind of gas.'

Murga raised his hands. 'I surrender,' he chuckled. 'I claim right of the Geneva Convention.'

Scott said, 'Beryl, it is not a good idea to wave an illegal hand gun about in front of armed Americans.'

Beryl grinned at him. 'It's not illegal. I have a licence as an authorized beaver trapper. Also, I was on my way to check my traps when I was kidnapped by that big lug and dragged in here against my will.'

'Do you really need a semi automatic for beaver control,' Scott asked.

'They get really mad when I start putting holes in their dams.'

Scott laughed. 'Serge, I think we have everything we need for the moment. How about we discuss it over a beer and let Beryl carry on trapping beavers?'

They both thanked Denny for his co-operation and walked out.

Denny said, 'Beryl, I think you can let Mr (he looked at Murga's business card) Claude Dubois leave us. I really do have to get back to work.'

Beryl reluctantly tucked the Uzi into her shopping bag. 'These climate change biker gangs,' she said darkly, 'they're causing all this trouble,' and she walked out with Murga leaving Denny spraying the cell phones with a fire extinguisher while smoke swirled around the light fixtures.

Licia, Miguel and I were squashed together watching the monitor.

'This is better than Netflix,' Miguel laughed.

'I'll write it down and see if they will buy a series,' Licia suggested.

Treeka said, 'Now, do you believe us? Look out the window.'

We all looked through the window as Andy, Con and Stonk the gorilla came out of Silverwood School and hurried toward a van parked on the sidewalk down the street. Lettering on the van advertised Internet Bundles. Stonk got into the van but Andy and Con stood in the street chatting to the driver.

Moments later Scott and Serge emerged and walked away toward rue Bank street without apparently noticing the van. Next Murga appeared followed by Beryl. Pacman's nose was just visible peeking out of her shopping bag. They waited at the curb, chatting as a white Cadillac SUV stopped further down the street. Murga walked to the van and spoke to Andy and Con for a few minutes before walking to the white SUV which drove away as soon as he was inside.

Yonnie said casually, 'Those Bunglers are still annoying me. I will fry their computers.' Both of the van's side doors flew open violently and two men stumbled out. Smoke billowed from the open doors. The men frantically sprinted away from the van, dived behind a snow bank and covered their heads with their arms. They were quickly joined by Andy, Con and Stonk.

'Another van is coming,' Treeka warned cheerfully.

'Yee-Hah!' Yonnie squealed as a second Internet Bundles van slithered down Sumac Street. 'I'll melt their engines again.' The van stopped abruptly as it rammed into the snow bank and two men jumped out. Purple smoke poured out of the open doors. The smoke dissipated quickly and the men cautiously returned to the vans and even more carefully got back in. We watched them drive away, very slowly.

'I couldn't melt their engines.' Yonnie sounded disappointed. 'They must have countermeasures. But I fried their computers.'

Miguel cleared his throat. 'They're using old vans. Which have a mechanical system to advance and retard the ignition. They don't have computerized ignition.'

Dunc was the last to leave Silverwood School. We watched as he waddled, skipped and skated across the street to Licia's house hopping gracefully off the top off a snow bank and gliding onto the porch. So when the doorbell rang we all ran downstairs to greet him.

'Hey, Dunc, long time no see,' I said. 'How's my favourite uncle?'

'Ah would be better with some haggis and a wee dram o' scotch.'

'How about beans on toast,' Licia offered.

'That will do,' Dunc said, 'With lots of butter.'

'What brings you to Ottawa?' I asked.

'Yonnie and Treeka alerted me to Murga's presence at Silverwood School. So ah walked into the meeting to see what he was up to. Ah'm an undercover goose, so he didna recognize me . . . Did yeh kenn Murga was back in town?'

'Yes. Yonnie and Treeka patched us in to the show a few minutes ago. We saw every thing including Murga, also known as monsieur Dubois.'

Dunc ruffled his feathers. 'Are you no going to invite me in from the snow filled and freezing street?'

'I thought we should check on Denny, first.' I said.

'Okay,' Miguel said. 'But don't tell him we saw the whole thing through his computer.'

'What about mah beans on toast?'

'Later,' Licia said as we pulled our boots on and grabbed our coats.
