Jennie sighed before downing the rest of her Red Bull. She loved her job at the ER, but the screaming toddler that had to be held down by three nurses made her question her life choices. At least Wang had confirmed that children were not part of her near future plans. Maybe one day, but definitely not anytime soon.
Taking a deep breath and putting on her professional smile, Jennie left the breakroom and made her way to the next patient. She grabbed the chart next to the door, reading through the notes to see what her colleague had done before his shift ended.
Woman, 23, possible fracture in left wrist from parkour, IV with Ketamine, waiting for X-rays.
Nothing unusual.
The conversation that was going on inside the examination room fell silent as soon as Jennie opened the door. Both the young woman on the bed and the young man sitting next to her looked up, the former letting out a wolf-whistle while looking Jennie up and down.
"Good Lord, she's hot!"
Right. Jennie had to remind herself that people reacted differently to the pain medication. Some emptied their stomach in the garbage can, others lost the filter between their brain and their mouth.
"Lisa Manoban?" Jennie asked, ignoring the comment while checking she had the right patient.
"You can call me whatever you want, beautiful."
"Yeah, that's her." The man sitting next to the bed sighed. "She won't be able to give you any straight answers so you can just talk to me. I'm her brother."
"I'll keep that in mind." Jennie answered politely before turning back to the patient. "I am just here to check how you are doing. The pain medication is obviously working so that's good. Do you feel nauseous? Headache? Seeing double?"
"I do like what I'm seeing double." The woman grinned while looking at Jennie's chest, then zeroing in on her name plate. "Jennie. You should write your name on my cast later, along with your phone number."
"Lisa, what the fuck?"
Jennie felt sorry for the brother, but was too amused by Lisa's attempts at winking to really pay attention to him. She seemed to have trouble only closing one of her eyes and instead just kept blinking at Jennie instead of giving her the wink she was going for. It was kind of... adorable, even with the long scar running over her face and the tattoos that covered a lot of her skin.
"You seem to be doing just fine. I will check in again in 15 minutes, but the doctor should be here soon with the X-rays. Just give a shout if you need anything."
"WAIT!" Lisa suddenly yelled when Jennie turned to leave. "I have a question!"
"Please Lisa, no."
Jennie ignored the brother. She turned back to her patient, who was her priority after all. "Yes?"
"Did it hurt," Lisa grinned, already pleased with whatever she was going to say next "when you fell from the vending machine? Because you're a SNACK!"
Jennie smiled and turned around again to leave. She heard the brother groan in despair, but it was overpowered by Lisa's laugh. Jennie had to admit, it was a line she'd never heard before, and it had caused her first genuine smile that day.

"Jennie?"
Jennie heard her name while making her way towards her car on the parking lot. It had been a long shift and she just wanted to go home, but apparently someone had decided otherwise. She looked up from her phone, stopping dead in her tracks when she recognized the person that had called out for her.
"I'm sorry to bother you," The woman started, seemingly a bit nervous. "I don't know if you remember me but-"
"Lisa Manoban, distal radius fracture from parkouring."
"Of course you remember me." Lisa mumbled while a blush started growing on her cheeks. She then lifted the bottle of wine she held in her unharmed hand. "I-uh, I brought you something, to apologize for the other day. I don't know what exactly it is I said to you, but from what I can recall it wasn't exactly appropriate."
"There's no need to apologize for that. You were under the influence of painkillers, and I've heard people say way worse in that situation."
"Still, it's not my proudest moment."
The two women stared at each other for a second, Jennie eventually giving in and accepting both the bottle and apology. She was surprised to recognize the wine Lisa had picked. For months she'd been meaning to try it, waiting for the right occasion and company. Maybe this was a sign.
"Would you like to share this bottle with me?" She asked Lisa, who was already in the process of turning around.
"What?"
"Well, your comments might not exactly have been appropriate for my workplace," Jennie smiled "but that doesn't mean that they left me entirely untouched. You intrigued me."
Lisa stared back at her, her mouth slightly agape while trying to find the right words. Not a single trace was left of the overly confident Lisa that had basically invited her into bed within seconds of meeting her. She was blushing, smiling nervously, struggling to speak. How was it possible that this was the person she'd treated two days earlier? Jennie thought it was funny, but also adorable above anything else.
"Does the offer to sign your cast still stand?"
That question seemed to pull Lisa out of her trance. She looked down at her cast, now decorated by several drawings and names, before looking back at Jennke.
"Oh, uh, if you want to? I mean, you don't have to..."
Jennie had already pulled a marker from her bag before Lisa was done talking. She carefully reached for the blonde's wrist and looked for a suitable spot, finding it near the place of the actual fracture. In her most elegant handwriting Jennie wrote her name, adding an X underneath. She then moved her hand and gently took hold of Lisa's calloused fingers. Without a second thought, Jennie brought the marker down again, writing her phone number down in the palm of Lisa's hand. Not permanent enough the have it on display for the next 6 weeks, but impossible for Lisa to lose it immediately.
"Give me a call when you feel like drinking some wine with me."
Jennie gave her a wink before continuing her way towards her car, leaving Lisa to stare at her hand and trying to make sense of what the hell had just happened to her.
