Lisa is confused.
Which isn't exactly unusual. She's not stupid, no matter what some people seem to think, but she does have a hard time in social settings. She just doesn't quite 'get it' like other people do—and she knows it's obvious.
It's why she was never able to make friends in high school, spent most of her time eating alone in the library or quietly at a table of other band kids who were too nice to tell her to leave. It's why her mother is, and always will be, disappointed in her.
(It's not the only reason, but probably in the top five.)
It's also why she owes basically her entire life to Jackson Wang, who sat next to her in their Introduction to Biology lecture on the first day of freshman year. Initially, she was annoyed. Jackson seemed like the kind of guy who would've made fun of her in high school, would've called her names and thrown rotten eggs at her house.
But Jackson was actually nice. They seemed to click for some odd reason, and Jackson took Lisa out to parties and always agreed to drive her to the grocery store when it was too cold to bike and the thought of eating at the dining hall again made her feel sick.
If it weren't for Jackson, Lisa's convinced that she would've spent her college days alone and anxious, a repeat of high school but on a larger scale.
That's not what happened—instead Jackson's friends became Lisa's friends and suddenly it's the first day of senior year and Lisa and Jackson are renting a two bedroom house together, three blocks from campus.
The house is a piece of shit. Lisa tells Jackson this after they meet there with the landlord for the first time.
"It's got charm."
"It's got holes in the floor and probably a major mold problem."
"It's close to campus."
"It's a fucking liability, Wang." Jackson hates when Lisa calls him that, "The front porch is literally caving in. There's no way it's up to code. And the basement smells like mildew and beer."
"It's cheap." Jackson says, like that's the point to end all other points and Lisa rolls her eyes because he's right. They've both got jobs but they're in college for fucks sake, it's not like they're rolling in money. Jackson smiles and takes her silence as a victory.
They sign the lease the next day.
Moving in isn't nearly as stressful as Lisa thought it'd be. Probably because Jackson and Taehyung do most of the heavy lifting. And it's still a piece of shit, but it's their piece of shit and once Lisa hangs her posters up on the walls of her room and is able to clean the dead bugs out of the air vents, it starts to feel more like home.
The neighbor's are nice—mostly other college kids and one older woman who lives right across from them. She tells Lisa that her boyfriend is very handsome, and when Lisa tells Jackson this he puffs his chest up like the opinion of an eighty-five year old woman has made his entire week.
(Lisa doesn't correct the woman. She's found, over the years, that it's easier to let people believe Jackson and her are together so long as they won't be overly involved in her life.)
They throw their first party three days before the start of their senior year. It's mostly Jackson's friends but Lisa invites some people from her music theory classes, too. And Lisa isn't drunk but she isn't sober either. It's always easier for her to be at these things when she's had a few drinks, she finds it makes her more social and easier to talk to.
But at this point she's wishing she was sober because she thinks she'd better understand exactly what's happening right now. Or maybe she wouldn't, maybe she'd be just as confused as to why Jennie Kim is sitting with Lisa on her bed, touching her more than is necessary for a conversation between friends.
