TW- talks of bloody wounds and medical treatments/ hospitals.

When we finally made it to Hawkins, I was a bit confused. There was a large line of cars leaving down as we made our way in. My mom didn't seem to be worried at all. I wonder what they told her this job was going to be.

As we drove closer to the heart of Hawkins I could see the giant rips in the ground, glowing with red. My eyes widened at the sight of what looked like gates to hell. What the fuck did she get us into?

"Mom what the hell is that?" I asked as I pointed out the window at the giant gaping trenches across Hawkins.

"That's what we're here for darling, to study what is happening underground. Dr. Owens will have you with us while we study this one. Since we want you to see what a truly astounding discovery this is. You won't be going anywhere without myself or Owens. But I can also set you up with your own team if I happen to be busy." She smiled with excitement as we pulled up to what looked like a big lab.

We got out and walked into the large building. The doors guarded by military forces. My mom showed them her paperwork and mine and they let us in. We've been to places like this before, but somehow this one felt... different. I couldn't put my finger on it. And the fact that my mom is even letting me in on this project is strange to me. She never let me get close to her last work. Maybe they need me for something? But I don't understand what since I'm still in high school. My mom's the true genius of the family.

We walked for awhile before heading into an elevator and heading down. When we finally made it to the floor we needed to be on it felt like 20 minutes had passed by. Mom stepped out of the elevator and went down towards what seemed to be an office. She pushed open the door and went inside. I quickly followed after her.

"Close the door sweetie," she asked as she put down a box of her things. There was a man sitting in front of her desk.

I closed the door and sat in a chair that was in the corner of the room. I put my purse down and waited for my mom to say something to the man.

"Thank you for having us Owens," my mother smiled as she sat down.

"Thank you for coming to help us! And thank you for agreeing to have your daughter work with us on this as well. I know she'll be a great help to all of us." He said turning to look from my mother to me.

"It's great to be a help," I said smiling at him.

They went on chatting about her contract and how long we would be here. It was all the boring stuff so I picked up my book and started reading until they were gonna tell me what my job was. I was reading the hobbit. I got through around 2 chapters before my mom got my attention.

"Shaundra, we're going to go over your part now honey." She said softly as she opened a file on her desk.

"We want you to help out with some patients and some smaller experiments throughout your mothers contract here. We won't have you do anything dangerous on your own. You'll always have someone with you if we think anything could go wrong." Dr. Owens said as he passed the file to me.

I took it from his hand and opened it.

"So I'll be looking after these people?" I asked

"Yes, they're just in recovery. Nothing to be afraid of." He smiled as he patted my hand.

Owens gave me a key card and keys to get into all the places I needed to go. He also gave me a map of the lab and where all my tasks would be. My mother and Owens both explained that all I would be doing for my daily tasks would be checking in on the patients and doing care for them. I had done this many times before so it wasn't anything I couldn't handle. I grabbed my bag and stood up heading for the door.
