The Conjuring
Part One—Chapter Three

Dalton was talking to the older girls as Lorraine talked to April in her room, and Ed interviewed Roger and Carolyn in the kitchen.

"So, your Mom and Dad told me that you were the first one to experience something in the house." Dalton started as he looked at Christine. They all sat in the living room, Dalton on one couch while the girls sat across from him. "Can you tell me about it?"

"There was, uh, someone pulling on my feet. I thought it was Nancy but she was in bed when it happened again. There was someone behind the door...and it talked to me. It was behind Nancy." Christine explained which prompted Dalton to look at Nancy.

"There was no one there...no one I could see at least. But the door slammed shut and Christine started screaming." Nancy said.

"Did you ever see anyone in the room? Or feel a presence that made you uneasy or uncomfortable?" Dalton asked Nancy and she shook her head.

"No."

Lorraine sat in the playroom with April, who held a music box. "Mom and Dad tell me that you have a friend." Lorraine started.

"His name's Rory. He lives here too." April answered, "But he's always sad."

"Why is that?" Lorraine asked.

"He won't tell me. But I think something bad happened to him. I like your friend, he's funny. Rory likes him too." April said and Lorraine's eyes widened. She saw the spirit hovering over Dalton's back, and hearing this made her worry for him rise. Some of the spirits in the house seemed to like him, and gravitate towards him. But one of them held so much hatred towards Dalton, and she didn't know how to help him.

After Dalton talked to the girls, he stepped outside for some fresh air. He stood on the porch and sighed before he noticed Lorraine out by the lake, under the huge tree that stuck out like a sore thumb. He started to walk towards her, noticing her tense position as she clutched her rosary tightly.

"Lorraine?" Dalton asked worriedly. She flinched and slowly turned around to face him. She didn't look at him, instead she looked at the spot right above his head. Dalton was confused before he heard the swinging of a rope and the creek of a tree branch. He didn't turn around and instead kept his gaze on Lorraine.

The front door opened and Ed walked out, watching them in confusion. He wondered why his wife was looking at their closest friend in fear, but then he noticed she wasn't looking at him, she was looking above him.

"Lorraine?" Dalton asked again. She finally looked at him, growing faint. She was about to fall but he lunged forward and caught her before she could. "L-Lorraine?!" She held onto him and Ed came running across the yard.

"We bought it at auction from the bank. So, you know, we never knew who lived here." Roger explained. All the adults sat at the kitchen table, Ed, Lorraine, and Dalton on one side while Roger and Carolyn sat on the other.

"Well, we all feel that what your house needs is a cleansing. An exorcism." Ed explained, glancing at Dalton and Lorraine who both looked uneasy. Lorraine had one of her hands wrapped tightly around Dalton's bicep, her motherly protectiveness showing. She knew the spirit had it out for Dalton and she would do all she could to help him.

"What, exorcism?" Roger looked confused, "I thought that was—I thought that was something that you do to people."

"No, not necessarily." Dalton answered, keeping his hands folded on the table.
