If someone had told Y/n a year ago that she and her twin brother were capable of doing magic, she would have laughed at their face.
Magic wasn't real.
The amount of times their Uncle Vernon had insisted (more like screamed in their faces) that there's no such thing as magic have made Y/n realize just that.
But then there's her twin brother, Harry Potter.
Needless to say, Harry's... a weird kid.
"Abnormal. Just like his mother." Aunt Petunia would say whenever Harry did something odd that would set the Dursleys off.
Now, what would Harry do, a harmless ten year-old little boy, to make the Dursleys detest him so badly?
Well, one time, Harry managed to magically grow his hair overnight after Aunt Petunia gave him a bad haircut.
Harry was also somehow able to jump over roofs to escape the wrath of his awful cousin Dudley and his gang of bullies.
And recently, Harry had managed to make the glass at the zoo exhibit disappear, release the boa constrictor inside it, and talk to it.
Everything that Harry did didn't make any logical sense, especially to the Dursleys. No matter how many times Harry had tried to explain that he didn't do anything, they'd simply shut him out and lock him in the cupboard beneath the stairs as punishment.
Y/n wouldn't believe anyone if someone were to tell her that she and her brother could do magic. That simply can't be true. Not even when a tall bearded man, the size of a giant, with a magical pink umbrella were to say it to her face.
Harry did some weird, unexplainable things in the past, sure. But not Y/n.
Y/n was a quiet, timid, and obedient kid.
Unlike Harry, she did what the Dursleys told her to.
Unlike Harry, she couldn't escape the fat grubby hands of Dudley and his gang, nor did she have magical fast-growing hair.
Unlike Harry, she couldn't talk to snakes or make glass disappear.
And unlike Harry, she posed no threat to the Dursleys.
She didn't give them any reason to be scared or mad at her — no strange flying over roofs, no crazy, color-changing, fast-growing hair, no hocus pocus. Nothing.
Of course, the Dursleys didn't favor her at all, not one little bit (especially her Aunt Petunia who despised her the most, saying that she looks just like her mother) — but they were glad that she was... normal, compared to her brother.
Y/n didn't get to starve, or get trapped in the cupboard as punishment, just like Harry did. But that didn't mean she's excused from all the house chores and abuse.
If someone were to tell Y/n that she was a witch, and her brother was a wizard, Y/n would just think it's a joke — a silly prank. As if ten years of torment and abuse from the Dursleys weren't funny enough for them.
But now the joke has gone too far. Too far believable to be a prank.
Just last night, Y/n was having the most miserable birthday ever, laying on the cold floor with her twin brother at this... shack.
