Chapter 1

Beads of sweat drip down my face as I pace back and fourth in the hospital's lobby. I run my sweaty palms through my messy, blonde quiff. My world is tumbling down.
"Luke, calm down mate. She is going to be okay." I turn to face Michael. "Calm down?" I tilt my head.
"Don't tell me to calm the fuck down! What? Am I s-supposed to meditate and hope for the best, when all I can think about is how this is my fault!"
I shout, not caring what anyone thinks. A young nurse approaches me. "Great, just fucking great." I mutter under heavy breaths.
"Excuse me sir?" She taps my ripped tank top. "I'm going to have to make you leave because you're disrupting the other visitors." My jaw locks.
"Do you know what is going on right now?" She grimaces at my tone.
"I get a call three days ago that my ex-girlfriend that I am still in love with disappeared off the planet of the earth for three worst days of my life and now all of the sudden she's here and I-I really don't know how, why, what happened, or if she's d-"
I choke on the thought. Tears start streaming down my cheeks and won't stop. Calum gives me a pat on the back.
"Lady, please." Calum pleads, pulling me into a hug. I silently sob into his shoulder. She nods and walks away.
"Luke, this is tough for all of us." Ashton tries to reassure me. Doesn't help, but I guess it's the thought that counts. I hesitantly let go of Calum and sit down. The time is about one-ten in the morning. All of the sudden, a middle aged doctor walks into the lobby and asks for me. I immediately rush over to him.
"What is your relation to Lily Valentine, Mr.Hemmings?" Hearing her name aloud sent chills throughout my spine.
"Boyfriend." I bite my tongue.
"Come with me." He says, gesturing me to follow him. I freeze. This can't be good. Doctors only say that when someone is d- "Are you coming?"
I warily nod as we walk through some doors. He walks and talks with me.
"Lily is a very special girl." Is, he said is. I agree. We stop in front of an elevator and we wait. "A nurse found her body laying in the trash cans outside today. I thought she was dead for sure, no doubt considering the condition she was in a few hours ago. It turns out she -was indeed still alive, but barley breathing. We aren't sure how long she had been in there though it seemed about a day or so."The elevator opened. He pushes floor number two. "She's very tough. The condition that she is in now is much better, but some of her injuries were not from the disposing into the trash. Luke, do you know what happened?"
"She disappeared for three days. This would've been the fourth if you hadn't found her in time. Thank you."
I hug the man. He doesn't hug back. The doors open. We walk down a long corridor of rooms for patients. Then, I see her. I can barely make out that it's the same girl. Burn marks cover her hands, there are still specs of dust in her smooth hair, a deep scratch mark runs across her right cheek, she has a faint black eye, and scars cover her back almost entirely. I can see from the open back of her gown. Her limp body is laying sideways. I kneel beside her and listen to the sounds of her shallow breaths. The doctor leaves me be and I find myself asking:
one question,
six words, and
seventeen letters.
"How did we end up here?"
